The Role
In this role as Sonographer, you will independently perform and report ultrasound examinations and train Radiology Registrars, alleviating Consultant Radiologists time constraints. The Sonographer will support the Area Lead Sonographer in meeting operational and strategic targets, and improving the quality of patient care within the Radiology Specialty.
In this key role, you will:
Clinical
- Evaluate referrals for appropriate history and clinical information.
- Use interviewing techniques to gather relevant information from the patient, or their representative, and the medical records regarding health status and medical history.
- Assess each individuals’ ability to tolerate procedures and evaluate any contra-indications, such as medications and / or insufficient preparation.
- Recognise and analyse sonographic characteristics of normal and abnormal structures and blood flow; adjust scanning technique to optimise image quality throughout the course of the examination so that a comprehensive diagnostic outcome is achieved.
- Provide an independent diagnostic report and advice on future patient management to clinicians and, recognising the need for urgent rather than routine management, exercise personal judgement and take appropriate action eg: urgent specialist referral or arrangement of additional imaging.
Management
- Deputises for the Lead Sonographer in their absence
- Prioritises own daily work load, reviews referrals, plans and liaises with medical staff in order to optimise the utilisation of scanning sessions, appropriateness of referrals
- Promotes a positive and collaborative atmosphere and effectively communicates with all members of the health care team regarding the welfare of the patient. Shares knowledge and expertise with colleagues, patients, students and all members of the health care team.
- Is actively involved in and committed to departmental audit and Quality Assurance, maintaining effective Clinical Governance.
- Provide practical training for the Radiology Registrars on equipment use, scanning technique and image interpretation in the clinical environment.
What You'll Bring:
- Registered Radiographer with valid HCPC Registration
- Educated to/working towards/operating at Degree Level
- Post graduate expertise within speciality / area of practice that demonstrates the required breadth of knowledge required to lead safety, effectively and efficiently.
- Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality / area of practice.
