Job overview
Working alongside the current Band 7 CNS to support patients throughout their skin cancer pathway, acting as a patient advocate and providing holistic, person-centred care. Supporting patients during consultant appointments and delivering nurse-led services, including breaking bad news, cancer follow-up and assessment of new patients following appropriate dermoscopy training.
Providing psychological support, patient education and health promotion, coordinating investigations and scans, and maintaining oversight of the patient cohort to ensure continuity of care. Supporting and contributing to the skin cancer MDT, working collaboratively with MDT colleagues across East Anglian networks and developing effective partnerships with other local clinicians and services.
Main duties of the job
- Support and contribute to the development and promotion of the skin cancer nursing service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care.
- Actively participate in and work alongside the multi-professional team to provide a professional service that meets the needs of patients diagnosed with skin cancer.
- Request diagnostic investigations and interpret within agreed protocols e.g. blood tests, CT/US scans and action appropriately within competence.
- Undertake and support holistic needs assessment of patients and carers to ensure appropriate and timely signposting.
- Ensure clinical leadership, education and support to other nursing staff caring for this client group.
- Develop strategies to identify and meet user’s support and information needs.
- Ensure a high quality service for patients with skin cancer including supportive care and psychological support.
- Provide specialist advice, support and education to skin cancer patients and their carers during treatment and follow up care.
- Discuss treatment options with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise and to act as patients advocate in the multi-disciplinary team meetings and elsewhere.
- Accept delegated responsibility for the provision of professional and managerial leadership of the service.
- Assist in the development of nurse led initiatives as part of the service development to improve patient experience.
