NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
Site Flow/Capacity and Demand Manager
This full-time post is one of three, providing seven-day cover alongside other Site Flow Managers.
We are seeking a proactive individual to join our Site Flow and Bed Management team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) as a Site Flow Manager. This crucial role is responsible for ensuring efficient daily hospital operations across the Emergency Department (ED), Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), and all acute in-patient areas, supporting safe and timely patient-centred flow.
The Site Flow Manager is key to meeting the Unscheduled Care Collaborative (UCC) access standard, ensuring patients are admitted, transferred, or discharged within the ED’s four-hour window. The role requires both proactive and transactional leadership, with an emphasis on clear structures and defined processes to achieve these standards.
The successful candidate must be able to manage multiple competing tasks, identify priorities quickly, and resolve complex issues where demands may conflict, always maintaining a patient-centred and safe approach. Decisions should prioritise the well-being and dignity of patients and staff, with professionalism and empathy essential during challenging conversations. By balancing responsibilities and addressing concerns promptly, the Site Flow Manager directly contributes to patient safety and a positive care experience.
Collaboration with clinical teams, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals, as well as senior operational managers, is central to the role. The Site Flow Manager oversees admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring they are timely and occur in the most appropriate clinical settings. Responsibilities include monitoring ED and site occupancy, patient wait times, ambulance offload delays, infection control, and other factors affecting patient flow. The role also involves clear communication with clinical teams to ensure timely and accurate information sharing for effective unscheduled care performance.
Effective communication and teamwork are essential, helping to maintain smooth patient transitions, high standards of clinical care, and efficient hospital performance. The Site Flow Manager must maintain and interpret accurate data, liaising with the on-call senior manager during out-of-hours periods regarding site performance as well as unscheduled care activity and performance.
Applicants should exhibit strong leadership qualities, demonstrate effective problem-solving abilities when work under pressure, and possess a thorough understanding of the requirements associated with Unscheduled Care, including familiarity with NHS Scotland’s Discharge Without Delay (DWD) Framework. While a clinical background is advantageous, it is not mandatory for this vital operational role; however, candidates must hold a relevant degree or have equivalent experience. Proficiency in analytical thinking, data interpretation, report writing skills and the use of e-Health systems, Microsoft Word, Excel, and TEAMs is essential.
If you meet these criteria and are seeking a rewarding opportunity, we encourage you to apply.
