Are you a registered nurse either band 5 or 6 with an minimum of 3 years experience in surgery?

An opportunity has arisen for a full time band 6 to work between our Nurse Led 24 bedded Day Case Unit and Surgical Pre Op Admissions  our dedicated theatre admissions unit.

You must be punctual, flexible and committed to the role with a determination to ensure patients on the ward receive the highest standards of care.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, forward-thinking nurse with a dynamic approach to join our motivated and supportive team.

DSU admit and recover multiple specialties including General Surgery, Maxo Facial, Urology, Breast, Gynaecology Orthopaedic, Vascular & ENT

Our patients have varying degrees of dependency which will mean organising and prioritising care accordingly.  You must be able to recognise and manage deteriorating patients and support junior staff in doing this.

Opening hours are Monday - Saturday 07.00-22.00 but staff must remain until the last patient has been discharged home or if the patient fails to meet discharge criteria is transferred to an inpatient bed.

Main duties of the job

General duties include supporting the Ward Manager and deputising in their absence. Undertake amendments  to Healthroster, sickness and absence management, conduct monthly audits and ensuring action plans are delt with, staff appraisals, ensure mandatory and medical device training is undertaken and the unit maintains green compliance at all times.

Coordinating DSU, Surgical Pre Op Admissions,  DSU escalation ward (inpatient escalation at  times pressure within the trust) recovery and nurse led discharge of patients ensuring , safe, personal and effective nursing care is provided to our patients.

You must be professional at all times and have a desire to want to develop your experiencing of managing and leading a team.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to liaise with patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team as well as your colleagues on the ward.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Foster People’s Rights and Responsibilities

  • a) Ensure all Trust standards are met within your workload and that a quality service is provided at all times.
  • b) Ensure all patients’ requirements are met with dignity, sensitivity and empathy.
  • c) Be non-judgemental in your approach to client care and attitudes.

Maintain Confidentiality of Information

  • a) Assist trained staff to carry out nursing care ensuring the patients’ confidentiality and privacy are maintained.
  • b) Maintain confidentiality with regards to the Data Protection Act for all information received.

Monitor and Maintain the Safety and Security of the Work Environment

  • a) Ensure patients’ safety, comfort, and welfare at all times.
  • b) Report accidents, incidents, losses as they occur to the nurse in charge.
  • c) Attend yearly up-dates on all statutory training, including basic life support and manual handling and moving.
  • c) The post holder must comply with all relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control.

Minimise the Risks Arising from Health Emergencies

  • a) Report untoward incidents and occurrences regarding changes in patient’s condition to the nurse in charge/named nurse as they arise.
  • b) Assist in emergency care once training undertaken.

Develop Relationships with People that value them as Individuals

  • a) Liaise with nursing, medical, and other disciplines within our defined clinical area and other departments and hospitals.
  • d) Be supportive to the patient and their family/carers at all times.

Receive and Transmit Information

  • a) Ensure teamwork reports are completed and details entered onto the computer.
  • b) Admit and discharge patients via the computer.
  • c) Arrange waiting list admissions and participate in transfer and discharge arrangements for patients.

Store and Retrieve Records

  • a) Maintain accurate registers and bed states.
  • b) Ensure patients’ notes are filed and up to date.
  • c) Ensure pathology results/X-Rays/reports are available and filed as necessary

Enable Patients to Maintain their Interests, Identity and Emotional Well-being whilst Receiving a Care Service

  • a) Anticipate and act on the physical and psychological needs of the patient and meet the same.
  • b) Provide a relaxed and professional environment conducive to promoting the well-being of the patient

Contribute to the Effective Communication where there are Communication Differences

  • a) Provide effective working relationships with patients/relatives/carers/ nursing team/medical and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • b) Report any complaints to the nurse in charge immediately.

Develop in the Work Role

  • a) Attend in-service training, study days, seminars, courses as rostered.
  • b) Attend a yearly IPR/Appraisal to set objectives and Personal Development Plan for the following twelve months with clinical leader.
  • c) Attend / undertake leadership and management courses.
