Job Summary:
This substantive part-time post is open to GMC registered Resident Doctors who have worked in the NHS for more than two years, at MS05/ST5+ and are interested in designing, delivering and leading multi-professional human factors focused simulation. The post holder will also contribute to patient safety and quality improvement workstreams. The post holder will have previous experience of simulation, debriefing and knowledge of human factors in healthcare, but additional in-house training will be provided. A teaching qualification is also desirable. Depending on available resources, there may be opportunities to fund relevant accredited study. The post holder will mainly work onsite at Epsom Hospital, although travel to other sites across the gesh group will also be necessary. Working days are anticipated to be Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (excluding bank holidays and periods when the simulation centre is closed). The post holder will be flexible around shift start/finish times to ensure they are present for the duration of service activity. Occasional changes of working day maybe requested to ensure adequate staffing. As this is a part-time role there will be very limited scope for working from home.

Main Duties/key responsibilities
- Utilising understanding of educational theory, work collaboratively with core and extended faculty to design high quality multiprofessional simulation-based education courses across various specialties • Contribute clinical expertise and information from relevant policy/procedural documents to scenario design and clinical teaching • Work in a manner which promotes psychological safety and equal learning opportunities for all participants • Proactively develop/update course materials and complete course admin in a timely manner • Assist in course day set-up and close processes (requires moving and handling of heavy furniture, manikins and equipment). • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment and escalate estates issues promptly • Lead course day activity/faculty, or proactively support other faculty allocated to co-ordinate, acting as a role model. • Operate manikins and audiovisual equipment competently. • Compassionately and empathetically role play patient, family or staff roles during scenarios. • During in-situ simulation courses, be fully aware of risks associated and proactively mitigate these. • Competently use the Systems Diamond Debrief Model with a non-judgemental approach, and train/supervise faculty developing their debriefing skills • Sensitively manage challenging situations involving faculty or course participants • Participate in evaluation, audit, report writing and quality assurance reviews
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Design and safely deliver multiprofessional simulation-based education: • Utilising understanding of educational theory, work collaboratively with core and extended faculty to design high quality multiprofessional simulation-based education courses for NHS Doctors, Nurses/Midwives, AHPs, Support workers and Students working in a range of specialties • Contribute clinical expertise, previous NHS experience and information from relevant policy/procedural documents to design of simulation scenarios and clinical teaching • Work in a manner which promotes psychological safety and equal learning opportunities for all participants • Proactively develop/update course materials and complete other course related administration duties in a timely manner • Assist in course day set-up and close processes, including arranging teaching room, simulation suite and control room (requires moving and handling of heavy furniture, manikins and equipment). • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment, dispose of waste/clutter appropriately, escalate estates issues promptly • Lead course day activity/faculty, or proactively support other faculty allocated to co-ordinate, acting as a role model. • Operate manikins, monitoring and audiovisual equipment competently during scenarios. • Compassionately and empathetically role play patient, family or staff roles during scenarios. • During in-situ simulation courses, be fully aware of risks associated with using simulation equipment/consumables in clinical areas and work to proactively mitigate these. • When delivering training in clinical areas, be aware of risks to patients which may result from reducing number of staff/reducing space available to deliver clinical care and be prepared to adapt activities to prioritise patient/staff safety/wellbeing • Competently use the Systems Diamond Debrief Model with a non-judgemental approach, and train/supervise faculty developing their debriefing skills • Sensitively manage challenging situations which may occur involving other faculty or course participants • Engage in peer review and participate in evaluation, audit, report writing and quality assurance reviews Human factors work: • Contribute knowledge of human factors in healthcare, Just Culture and the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) to a range of face to face and online courses e.g. human factors focused simulation courses, human factors courses, PSIRF courses, Continuous improvement courses. • Contribute to patient safety and continuous improvement projects involving human factors across the group Leadership: • Lead the design and delivery of allocated simulation courses, ensuring adherence to centre standards by all faculty • Act as a leader within the EStH Simulation Team and with external faculty co-ordinating activity and supervising/supporting less experienced faculty members • Act as a role model to faculty and course participants and as an ambassador for safe and high-quality patient-centred care • Assist the Lead and Deputy Lead in their role managing the day-to-day running of Simulation service and deputise for them in their absence, ensuring that a high-quality simulation service is consistently provided. • Lead specific service improvement initiatives.

Professional standards/experience/development: • Work in accordance with GMC Professional standards, within scope of competence and maintain professional registration. • Proactively engage with supervision, appraisal and revalidation as required by GMC and according to trust policy • Complete trust and local induction, allocated mandatory and statutory training, and relevant in-house training.
Other: • Uphold Trust/group values and ensure activity aligns with organisational priorities. • Adhere to Trust/group policies and procedures, legislation, and recommendations of local risk assessments, raise any issues/concerns to Service Lead or Centre Manager and report incidents/near misses via Datix. Fully engage in any learning response required. • Work flexibly in terms of shift start and finish times and cross-site working according to needs of the service • Work autonomously when required, managing own workload/time effectively, including meeting deadlines, regularly feedback and update the senior team on your workload and escalate early if any issues that require senior support. • Attend regular team and faculty meeting (in-person or via Microsoft Teams as appropriate) • Competently use Microsoft Office applications including word, powerpoint and excel • Assist to raise the profile of simulation within the Trust via comms and other means • Represent the department at internal trust level meetings and external meetings/events among the simulation community and other groups. • Engage in research and projects, and present academic work at local and national events • Assist in the production of audio-visual educational materials for Trust and wider use. • To undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service.
