ACCOUNTABLE TO Head of Podiatry
The post holder will work as a dedicated member of the Podiatry Team, using practical and technical skills to support the provision of patient and client care under the direction of a Podiatrist.
The Podiatry service operates across all three of the Trust Localities: Craigavon & Banbridge, Newry & Mourne and Armagh & Dungannon. You can express interest in working across a preferred locality area.
To work as an integral member of the Podiatry Service carrying out duties as agreed and delegated by the podiatrists.
To provide basic foot care and supportive interventions as delegated, undertaken within the agreed competency level for the post holder so such is carried out safely and effectively.
To maintain relevant stock control systems to ensure sufficient supplies whilst preventing waste.
Undertake administrative procedures e.g. telephone enquiries, booking review appointments etc.
To assist, encourage and promote patient / client independence through enabling the individual to participate in their own personal care. This may include the sharing of health education awareness.
To work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team setting to ensure the effective delivery of services to patients / clients and their carers.
To use effective communication tools, verbal and non-verbal to communicate treatment programmes to patients who have barriers to understanding or communicating.
To report any changes in a patient’s circumstances or condition, as well as all untoward incidents/accidents to clinical line manager in accordance with Trust procedures.
To organise and prioritise own workload with the guidance of Podiatrist.
To maintain accurate records of work undertaken and keep statistics as required including documenting patient contacts in line with Trust standards.
To treat all patients / clients and their carers with respect, dignity and courtesy and regard all matters relating to the individual and his/her circumstances as strictly confidential.
To maintain effective relationships with the patient and carers and all appropriate members of staff involved with the individuals care.
To participate in all in-service training and the Staff Appraisal and Supervision Process.
To record faults, breakages, misplacements or loss of Podiatry equipment in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures.
To adhere to all the Trusts policies and procedures.
To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post that may be arranged by Podiatrist.
Take templates for the manufacture of Orthotic devices as advised by the Podiatrist.
Undertake clinical and administrative audit data collection as instructed by the Podiatry Team lead or Principal podiatrist.
Assist in the delivery of structured Foot health education talks to groups both within and external to HSCNI.
Preparation of clinical areas and maintenance of a clean working environment as per Trust’s Infection Control Policies.
Participate in the delivery of foot health education and care for patients in a variety of settings.
To manage the treatment of patients as delegated by a podiatrist according to their treatment plan. To work without direct supervision and be responsible for monitoring patient progress and referring back to Podiatrist when appropriate.
Diabetic Foot Screening
Cutting and filing patient’s toenails
Reducing thickening toenails with a nail drill
Removing debris from the sulci of toenails and inserting a nail pack.
Applying dressings under the direction of a Podiatrist
Manufacture and renewal of silicone orthoses / simple insoles which had been previously prescribed by a Podiatrist.
Removing minor callous with a Moore’s disc.
Giving basic foot care advice e.g. hygiene, use of emollients, footwear etc.
To provide practical assistance to patient
Act as a clinical assistant at nail surgery sessions.
Take templates for simple orthosis
Follow all podiatry service procedures and agreed care plans.
