JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will be working as a specialist general radiographer where you will perform radiographic examinations, provide direct care and a high quality diagnostic imaging service in order to assist in the management of patients referred from clinicians. You will receive training in advanced diagnostic image interpretation. In this role you will have opportunity to rotate through other imaging modalities.

The post holder is required to perform a range of Specialised Diagnostic Procedures, whilst participating in the Radiography Shift Rota. They will supervise, mentor and train Band 5 Radiographers, supervise assistant practitioners, radiography assistants and student radiographers, ensuring a high standard of Diagnostic Imaging is maintained for Southern Trust patients. They will be required to work unsupervised, during normal working hours and out of hours, producing high quality images.

KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinically

Ensure that own practice and that of staff under your supervision is in keeping with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Publications on Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics (September 2024) and the Standards of proficiency (2023) and meets the required professional, national and local standards of radiography practice.

Ensure that Radiation Protection Rules are applied at all times and to be familiar with and obey Ionising Radiations Regulations (N.I.) 2017 and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (N.I.) 2018 and observe local rules concerning ionising radiation.

Be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient records in line with HCPC Standards of Proficiency – Radiographers (September 2023) and record keeping system under Ionising Regulation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2018 (IRMER).

Undertake a wide range of specialised diagnostic imaging procedures effectively and efficiently.

Take responsibility for making clinical decisions within area of responsibility, and provide supervision and guidance to band 5 and support staff in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Provide leadership and supervision to radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiography assistants throughout the shift.

Undertake assessments, mentoring and supervision student radiographers and recently qualified radiographers.

Assess patient understanding of proposed examinations, and where appropriate gain valid informed consent or work within the required legal framework with patients that lack capacity to consent to examination.

Give relevant advice to the patient/carer, on post-examination procedures liaising as appropriate with other staff groups who are associated with the care of the patient.

Undertakes training of newly qualified radiographers in specialised diagnostic imaging procedures.

Ensure the safe use and maintenance of imaging equipment, adhering to all local safety procedures, managing breakdowns and servicing as required with external companies.

• To participate and contribute to the Radiology Quality management System, and corresponding Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) accreditation process.

Manage clinical risk and take responsibility for radiation safety in your work area, including checking equipment for malfunctions and errors.

Be able to provide evidence of active participation in Quality Assurance and Service Improvements.

Ensure that all data inputs are accurately recorded in order to maintain the integrity of the data for both the patient and the service.

PROFESSIONAL

Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice by maintaining a CPD portfolio.

Participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraiser and be responsible for complying with his/her agreed personal development programme, to meet set objectives and competencies.

Be an active member of the in-service training programme by attending tutorials, individual training sessions and external courses.

Initiate and participate in service audits, reporting findings to senior staff and taking follow up actions based on results.

Promote and maintain a high quality service, which demonstrates a sound knowledge of Clinical Governance and Risk Management.

Provide support, guidance and training to other staff.

Provide support and reassurance to patients, taking into account their physical and psychological needs.

Keep abreast of specialized techniques and service developments in Radiography.

Highlight abnormal findings to referring clinicians where relevant.

Be an expert in trauma and general imaging, providing a high quality diagnostic service.

Ensure performance standards are adhered to and maintained by all staff across all areas you are working.

ORGANISATIONAL

Supervise Assistant Practitioners, Radiography Assistants and students on a daily basis. This includes co-operating with the induction of new staff.

Ensure safe practice under the Health & Safety at Work Order.

Provide any relevant statistical information as required to allow for the monitoring of the service.

Perform any other duties as may be requested by senior staff.

Work flexibly, to ensure the provision of a Trust Wide Diagnostic Imaging Service including participation in the 24/7 general rota

Available / able to work any 5 days out of 7 over the 24 hour period, which may include on-call / stand-by / sleep-in duties, shifts, night duty, weekends and Public Holidays if required immediately on appointment or at a later stage following commencement in response to changing demands of the service.

Work as a Lone Worker within one of the Southern Trust Radiography Departments, ensuring an effective, efficient service.

Implement new procedures required for service improvements within area of responsibility.

Perform designated roles within the department including but not limited to Health and Safety; Infection Prevention and Control; Quality Assurance; Manual Handling; Radiation Protection; Mentorship; Educational Support; Wellbeing; Audit and Service Improvement.
