Join our Adult Speech and Language Therapy team to work with acute inpatients and outpatients and develop specialist skills in managing patients with dysphonia and more complex dysphagia presentations, including head and neck cancer.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of the inpatient Speech and Language Therapy team, providing assessment and management of adults with communication and swallowing disorders across a range of acute specialties, including Acute Medical Unit, Critical Care, Frailty, Dementia, ENT, Surgery, Cardiology, Orthopaedics and Respiratory.

The role also includes managing an outpatient caseload, with opportunities to develop specialist skills in voice disorders, dysphagia, and head and neck cancer, including working as part of the wider multidisciplinary head and neck service.

You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Trust to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care, contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives, and support the delivery of responsive, patient-centred services.

The successful candidate will play an active role in education and training by providing teaching to the wider multidisciplinary team, supporting Speech and Language Therapy students and assistant practitioners, and contributing to the clinical development of the wider SLT service through audit, supervision, and continuous professional development.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with adult acute inpatients with swallowing and communication disorders caused by a wide range of aetiologies
  • Experience of working with complex ethical issues regarding swallowing and nutrition and hydration
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Evidence of knowledge of local and national policy and SLT standards of care within specialisms

Desirable

  • Experience of working with dysphagic and dysphonic patients in an outpatient setting
  • Experience of working with adult patients with Head and Neck Cancer including maxillofacial and laryngectomy and tracheostomy
  • Experience of working in ENT settings

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Profession Specific Degree; eg BSc Speech Sciences or Speech and Language Therapy MMedSci degree
  • Member of the Healthcare Professionals Council (HCPC)
  • Member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • Post basic training in dysphagia – minimum of one year’s experience

Desirable

  • Voice training and competencies
  • Leadership training
