We have a vacancy for an exceptionally organised and highly motivated individual with a background in epidemiology, statistics, data science, health geography, spatial epidemiology or a related quantitative discipline to work on the Healthy Urban Places programme within Born in Bradford.

Healthy Urban Places is a major UKRI-funded transdisciplinary research programme focused on understanding how local urban environments can be harnessed to improve population health and reduce inequalities. The successful candidate will contribute to research using cohort studies, linked routine data, spatial data and environmental data, with a particular focus on spatial and health inequalities.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will lead or contribute to analyses across three broad topic areas: housing, healthy environments, and urban heat islands. They will be responsible for preparing and analysing complex linked datasets, applying appropriate quantitative, spatial and/or quasi-experimental methods, and working with academic, NHS, local authority and community partners to ensure that findings inform policy and practice.

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of the Born in Bradford Epistats team on a high-profile, applied population health research programme with the potential to generate evidence that directly informs place-based interventions and reduces health inequalities.

The post is based at the Bradford Institute for Health Research, Bradford Royal Infirmary. The successful applicant will be expected to work on-site in Bradford for a minimum of three days per week

Essential

  • Ability to use at least one common statistical package e.g. Stata, R
  • Ability to perform a range of advanced statistical techniques
  • Preparation and presentation of statistical reports and analyses
  • Effective organisational skills, ability to plan and work on multiple projects in parallel, and implement objectives effectively
  • Accurate, methodological and pays attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and work to deadlines
  • Facilitation skills and the ability to work effectively and flexibly within a multidisciplinary team
  • Effective communication and presentation skills (written and oral)
  • Skills in reviewing and summarising epidemiological literature
  • Ability to write papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to produce reusable program code in at least one common statistical or database package e.g. Stata, R

  • Knowledge of sources of relevant reference datasets

  • Experience of project management
  • Relevant research experience in epidemiology, biostatistics or a closely related quantitative discipline
  • An academic track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience of working with large data sets
  • Experience of using/interrogating databases
  • Experience of Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience of collecting, processing and analysing longitudinal research data in human population studies
  • Experience of advanced quantitative data analysis, e.g. multilevel modelling, longitudinal analysis
  • Experience of working in collaborative research groups including NHS, academics and other stakeholders
  • Experience of disseminating complex research findings in accessible formats to different stakeholder groups including clinicians and the general public
  • Experience of conducting scientific literature reviews
  • Evidence independent work in a research and / or statistical environment
  • Previous experience of developing research proposals and funding applications in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or applied health research

  • Experience of developing programmatic analytical tools for others to use

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant epidemiological, biomedical, statistical, or applied health research
  • Demonstrable relevant medical statistics/epidemiological work experience
