Main duties of the job

Responsible for:

Diagnosis, treatment and continuing care of patients presenting as emergencies or referred; teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other staff; conducting research and participating in development activities of the department.

Main purpose: To provide, in conjunction with consultant colleagues at the Homerton University Hospital a comprehensive out-patient, day stay and in-patient service for residents and for those referred from further afield to the breast unit.

The post is designed for a fixed period to allow the candidate to gain additional experience in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. To ensure we can continue to offer this opportunity to others, the contract will run for a limited time and is not intended to be an ongoing post, except in exceptional circumstances.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

The post will be based in the Department of General Surgery. The post involves supporting the supervising consultant in the full spectrum of clinical activity including main theatres, day surgery theatres, out-patient one-stop and follow-up clinics, paper clinics and ward work.

Homerton Breast Unit provides a full spectrum of Oncoplastic and Reconstructive services. This will provide an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced surgeons, particularly as they look to provide high-quality clinical care. The appointee will be expected to perform a full-time surgical practice with an interest in breast surgery. They will be a member of the breast multidisciplinary team and is expected to contribute to and practice according to the local, network and national clinical practice guidelines. There is no on-call commitment in the post.

Research Responsibilities

Homerton University Hospital has an active research environment. The breast unit is actively involved in multicentre trials. The appointee will be encouraged start new research projects or audits in addition to participating in any ongoing trials and national audits.

Management and Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to take part in the routine management and administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the supervision of junior medical staff. The appointee will also be expected to take an active part in multi-disciplinary audit, to be involved in attempting to improve the quality of care to patients and the timeliness of communications with general practitioners, and to achieve improvements in clinical risk management.

There is a monthly half day session set aside within the clinical directorate at the Homerton for Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance during which all elective clinical duties are suspended to ensure attendance. A yearly timetable is available.

There is also an open-ended audit programme for all breast cancer patients, continuously auditing and evaluating several parameters as proposed by the recent NICE guidelines on breast cancer audit.

Homerton University Hospital is committed to implementing the New Deal for junior doctors, particularly on junior doctor’s hours. All the Trust’s consultants are responsible for ensuring that the hour’s targets are met and the junior doctors’ timetabled educational programmes are maintained.

Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education is an integral part of the fellow post. The appointee will be encouraged to ensure that his/her full entitlement to CME/Study Leave is taken. Financial assistance with Course fees and travel is available.

Teaching

Homerton Hospital considers the teaching of medical students and surgical trainees of high priority. Homerton University Hospital has both undergraduate and postgraduate students, for which there are active teaching programmes. There trainees attend monthly half-day regional teaching sessions set aside for postgraduate teaching.

There are also two PRHO teaching sessions each week (in line with the University guidelines) and the successful candidate will be expected to help in giving lectures.
