Senior Medical Engineer

Job summary

Medical Engineering provide an efficient and cost effective maintenance service for medical and electronic equipment throughout all sites that QEF have service level agreements. The range of equipment involved includes specialist highly complex life support equipment such as anaesthetic machines, ventilators, hemofiltration devices, x-ray, ultrasound and patient monitoring. Ensure that medical staff and patients have at their disposal reliable electronic and medical equipment which is electrically safe, clinically suitable and diagnostically accurate.

Main duties of the job

• Be capable of working as a team member and have the ability to work to tight deadlines which may at times involve having to work at other sites within the region.
• When necessary be prepared to work overtime and shift patterns that meet the needs of the service.

Potential for working with contaminated equipment in clinical environments; potential exposure to body fluids / cytotoxic drugs.

Provide user training on medical equipment for Clinical, Technical and AHP staff, students or visitors.

Provide technical training on medical equipment for groups of staff, students or visitors.

Plan and carry out preventative and corrective maintenance on a wide range of complex and patient-critical medical devices.

Prioritise workload in response to urgent requests for assistance.

Liaise with clinical staff to schedule planned preventative maintenance, adjusting schedules in response to short-term clinical needs.

Controls daily work schedule allocating and self-prioritising work within the Team using the departments computerised equipment management database.

Maintain service schedules, records documentation in accordance with QEF's Quality System and business ethos.

We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA).

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

Job responsibilities

Provide clinical technical services on all sites that QEF have service level agreements

Calibrate and maintain specialist and highly complex electronic equipment for use on patients, using various calibration methods and software tools.

Using the appropriate tools and test equipment, repair and safety check medical devices within all healthcare environments, including patients homes.

Understand and clearly communicate the nature of problems and faults, with professional and where necessary patient end users.

Exercise judgement as to the cause of the problem whether relating to user error, equipment failure or environmental issues.

Rectify equipment faults, undertaking repairs to component level with complete understanding of the requirements for staff, patient and system safety.

Responsible for the purchase of test equipment, spare parts and accessories as required for equipment maintenance.

Carry out acceptance testing of new equipment and maintain accurate equipment database by producing work requests, update equipment test records and service history by adding information onto planned preventative maintenance system.

Liaise with equipment suppliers and external bodies regarding all aspects of medical device operation and safety. This will include co-operating with the MHRA in investigations regarding defects and failures. Undertake any training, which is identified as being necessary to update skills and knowledge in relation to effective performance of the post.

Carry out Medical Equipment Library duties where appropriate.

Support the Medical Devices Connectivity Manager to ensure medical devices connected to IT networks are effectively managed. This includes the management of connectivity related risks and involvement in digitisation and integration projects as appropriate.

Participate in the out of hours on-call rota where appropriate. This will involve dealing directly with calls for help, from hospitals, health care premises or a patients home.
