This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. Main duties of the job

This post provides approximately 50% time for clinical trial based research along with 50% time to undertake clinical duties and projects within the department of hepatology at University Hospital Southampton NHSFT.

The main purpose is to provide clinical support for NIHR trials running and being set up in Southampton and to undertake hepatology clinics and other clinical duties as required by the department.

The start date will be 2nd September 2026.    Key Qualities – You must possess GMC registration, MRCP, and relevant experience within the NHS. Additionally, a minimum of one year’s experience working with a gastroenterology or hepatology team is required.

This position will support the recruitment of patients for both commercial and non-commercial trials and assist in reviewing patients within the outpatient setting, thereby helping to minimize wait times for new and follow-up appointments.

The Hepatology team at UHS was the first to earn IQILS accreditation, accomplishing this milestone by fostering teamwork and maintaining an inclusive atmosphere.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Research

You will provide clinical support to the growing portfolio of hepatology clinical trials running in University Hospital Southampton and will require GCP training. You will be involved in all aspects of clinical trials including set up and site initiation visits, patient identification, consent, recruitment as well as monitoring safety and data collection during the clinical trial and follow up.  Time and support will be available for you to develop a research project of your own, which may provide the foundation to a future application for a higher degree. Alternatively, you may choose to develop another skill such as education or clinical management and there is ample scope for training within the role.

Clinical duties

You will be required to undertake clinical work as a registrar within the hepatology department. This will include two general hepatology outpatient clinics a week and other duties as required by the department. These may include supporting inpatient teams, undertaking endoscopy lists, teaching and assisting with departmental administration. The post does not have an on call commitment.

You are responsible for ensuring that the patient, family and carers are at the centre of everything you do.

Be open, honest and willing to acknowledge when something has gone wrong.  Make timely apologies and take action to report incidents, including near misses; to ensure that as an organisation we learn.

You should continuously seek to reduce harm by speaking up to managers and leaders if you believe that a lack of skills, knowledge or resources place patients at a risk of harm or if your concerns are not being listened to.  Managers and leaders must listen to others when they raise concerns and take action.

Wholeheartedly commit to learning about safety, continually striving to improve excellent care.  Develop your own ability to detect and correct defects.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION    Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay).       Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5; •    Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training     •    Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)  •    A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)                     Proposed interview date: 10th April 2026
