Job overview

We are looking for a motivated Senior Clinical Respiratory Physiologist to join our friendly team within the IQIPS accredited paediatric Lung Function Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS  Foundation Trust.

The unit is equipped with a suite of rooms dedicated to paediatric lung function testing; including spirometry, whole body plethysmography, CO gas transfer measurement, exhaled and nasal nitric oxide, multiple breath washout (MBW), respiratory muscle testing (MIP, MEP, SNIP), submaximal exercise, exercise challenge and hypoxic challenge tests.

We perform measurements on over 4000 children and young people per annum with a wide range of medical conditions including chronic lung disease, cystic fibrosis, asthma, neuromuscular disease, lung transplant, bone marrow transplant, and rheumatology patients. In addition to our routine clinical testing, we have an ongoing research programme.

You will contribute to the day-to-day running of the laboratory, deputising in the absence of the Chief or Lead Physiologists and working closely with the multidisciplinary teams from respiratory and other specialities. A helpful, professional environment supplemented by regular meetings, MDT involvement, teaching sessions and the opportunity for course attendance will allow the candidate to develop paediatric skills in treating a wide range of patients.

This is a part-time post 22.5hrs/3 days a week

Main duties of the job

This is a part-time post for a Senior Clinical Physiologist to work as part of a team of respiratory physiologists performing standard and more complex Lung Function tests for a range of specialities.

Main duties include;

  • To function as part of the Lung Function Laboratory Team to provide an effective lung function service to paediatric patients.  2. To maintain, calibrate, and set-up lung function equipment.  3. To maintain the high quality of paediatric lung function testing by ensuring adherence to a Quality Management System (IQIPS)   4. To perform clinical lung function tests including spirometry, Gas Transfer, Reversibility studies, Skin allergy test, and Maximal inspiratory and expiratory muscle pressure tests.    5. To be responsible for consumable stock levels and annual stocktakes  6. To contribute towards a multi-disciplinary approach to the management of children with a wide range of respiratory conditions.  7. Undertake appropriate quality control of respiratory function test results.  8. Interpret lung function results appropriately and upload to electronic patient record (Epic)  9. To contribute to any research projects.  10. To perform and lead on complex lung function tests including Multiple Breath  Washout, exercise induced bronchoconstriction testing and Hypoxic challenge testing.   11. To maintain and document continuing professional development.   12. To be responsible for the maintenance and routine checking of the resuscitation trolley.
