An exciting opportunity has presented itself for a pharmacist with both clinical cancer experience and a strong interest in clinical trials to join our senior cancer pharmacy team. This post is a permanent position working within the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU) at UCLH. You will work closely with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist to manage a fast paced, growing service.

As a world-leading research facility, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver clinical trials, including early phase, and streamline the service.

As a registered pharmacist, you will provide a person-centred approach to care and manage specialist pharmacy services to patients within the CRF & CCTU. You will collaborate with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist to improve the pharmacy service for these patients and educate pharmacy and multidisciplinary staff on these innovative treatments.

The post holder will lead, develop and undertake clinical and operational audit and research in the CRF & CCTU.

The UCLH Cancer Pharmacy Team is a large team across oncology, haematology and transplantation and works well together. Our ideal candidate will: •    help us develop and deliver our vision for a person-centred clinical pharmacy service •    drive directorate and departmental clinical governance issues, clinical audit, practice research, service improvement projects and more •    be keen to further their career within cancer services.

Main duties of the job

The main day to day responsibilities would include: •    To manage the day-to-day delivery of clinical pharmacy services to the CRF & for CCTU trials and streamline the clinical pharmacy pathway •    To lead and support the opening and management of cancer clinical trials  •    To lead and manage amendments for cancer clinical trials  •    To provide highly specialised and complex evidence-based clinical advice and information to the multidisciplinary team on the care and treatment of cancer clinical patients •    To deliver and promote high quality, cost effective, patient focused pharmaceutical care •    To manage cancer pharmacists delivering clinical pharmacy services to the CRF •    To support the training and development of cancer pharmacists in the field of cancer trials

The cancer pharmacy team consists of specialist cancer pharmacists and technicians that work for the Cancer Division and is fully integrated within the Division to provide clinical pharmacy services to patients. The team also collaborates closely with the UCLH Pharmacy Department to ensure pharmacy standards are maintained.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum five years post-registration.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a clinical pharmacist in a cancer specialty.
  • Experience of verifying prescriptions for systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT).
  • Actively seeks to improve the ward and clinical services provided to enhance quality of care to cancer patients.

Desirable

  • Experience as a clinical pharmacist in clinical trials.
  • Experience in reviewing and setting up cancer clinical trials including validation of electronic protocols.
  • Experience of managing change and driving service improvements.
  • Evidence of evaluating own and pharmacy staff’s work to drive and deliver service improvements.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary health services research.
  • Evidence of publishing in a peer reviewed journal.

Communication

Essential

  • Demonstrates high level clinical knowledge, reasoning, and judgment, manages difficult and ambiguous problems.
  • Able to communicate complex, contentious, and sensitive information effectively when using clear written and spoken English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels both within and beyond pharmacy and the trust.

Desirable

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Master degree in Pharmacy, or equivalent.
  • Pharmacist Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience and expertise.
  • Evidence of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.

Desirable

  • Independent prescriber, or willingness to undertake an independent prescribing qualification.
  • Advanced practitioner as defined by the Faculty of Cancer Pharmacy Advanced and Consultant Level Framework (ACLF).
  • Evidence of formal management training.

Personal and People Development

Essential

  • Commitment to continually update skills, knowledge, and expertise; and maintain a portfolio of practice.
  • Experience of identifying training needs and delivering education and training programmes for clinical staff groups.
  • Ability to delegate authority appropriately.

Desirable

  • Experience of managing staff including objective setting, performance monitoring, recruitment and selection, and managing poor performance.
  • Evidence of evaluating own and pharmacy staff’s work to drive and deliver improvements in service quality.
