Job description

A Senior Clinical Fellow is required for Belfast Health and Social Care Trust Obstetric & Gynaecology Service. Post holders will be required to work under the supervision of consultant staff in the management of patients and will participate on the resident doctor rotas (Covering Royal Jubillee Maternity Service (RJMS) or Belfast City Hospital (BCH) Rotas).

These posts are available from 4th February 2026.

The clinical commitments of this post will include assisting Consultant colleagues in Obstetric and Gynaecology and support of outpatient clinics.

A 1:8 Full shift rota is in operation.

The post holder will spend six months in Obstetrics (RJMS) and six months in Gynaecology.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Management of Obstetric & Gynaecology patients, under supervision.
• The post holder will be required to work flexibly and undertake reasonable alternative patterns of duty that may be required from time to time to meet the demands of the service.
• The post holder will be required to provide cover where necessary undertaking irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
• The post holder’s clinical duties will be allocated by the Clinical Director and rota co-ordinator.
• The post holder will be required to maintain their knowledge and skills.
• The post holder will participate in the training of Resident Medical Staff and Medical Students as required.
• Participation in research and audit will be actively encouraged.
• The post holder will be required to undertake administrative duties related to patient care.
• Antenatal and Gynaecological Clinic attendance.
• Labour Ward and Obstetrics/Gynae Theatre attendance.
• Inpatient care.
• Admission Room and Family Planning Clinic attendance.
• GP liaison.
• Patient discharge letters.
• Attendance and contribution to Medical Audit.
• The post holder will be expected to participate in teaching, research and audit within the department as far as other duties permit within the agreed times only.
• He/she will be expected to attend regular teaching and audit meetings conducted within the speciality and would be expected to participate in training, appropriate to career development, in particular, subjects relevant to Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
• He/she may also be required to perform additional duties on occasional and unforeseen circumstances for which appropriate remuneration will be made.
• The post holder will be expected to provide evidence of continuing professional development and participate in annual appraisal leading to revalidation.
• The post holder will be expected to participate in departmental audit.

Person specification

Qualifications / Registration / Experience

• Essential: Full registration with the General Medical Council and a Licence to Practise (must have both at time of appointment)
• Essential: A Minimum of 4 years experience in a relevant specialty (not including Foundation Modules) of which at least three years must have been in obstetrics and gynaecology.
• Essential: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 MRCOG already passed at time of application (ST5 + level)
• Essential: Demonstration of Commitment to Career Development in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
• Desirable: It is desirable that applicants have at least 4 years experience in a relevant specialty.

Other (eg Driving etc)

• Essential: Eligibility to work in the UK as per UKBA Immigration Regulations
• Essential: Must have access to a means of transport to facilitate movement between sites.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

• Essential: Be able to demonstrate skills in both written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
• Essential: Applicants must have taken undergraduate medical education/training in English. or Have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application – Overall 7.5, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7 or Have taken the medical version of the Occupational English Test (OET), achieving at least a grade B in each testing area (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) in the same test and have obtained them in the most recent sitting of the test or
• Essential: If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence
