An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This one-year post is designed for a surgeon who has completed higher surgical training in General Surgery and is seeking advanced specialist experience in Upper GI surgery prior to consultant appointment.

The successful candidate will join a high-volume tertiary Upper GI service serving a population of approximately 2.5 million people. The Unit performs 120–140 oesophagogastric cancer resections annually and delivers a comprehensive programme of benign oesophageal surgery, including complex revisional procedures.

Based primarily at the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals, the postholder will work closely with a team of experienced Upper GI consultants, gaining extensive exposure to oesophagogastric cancer surgery, advanced minimally invasive techniques, endoscopy, outpatient care and multidisciplinary team working. The role includes responsibility for the day-to-day management of Upper GI inpatients and leadership of the resident medical team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide senior clinical support within the Upper Gastrointestinal (Oesophagogastric) Surgery service, delivering high-quality inpatient, outpatient, operative and endoscopic care under consultant supervision. The postholder will play a key role in the day-to-day management of Upper GI patients and will provide clinical leadership to resident medical staff within the unit.

Key responsibilities include:

• Participation in elective and emergency Upper GI surgical services, with particular exposure to oesophagogastric cancer surgery and complex benign oesophageal surgery.
• Leadership and coordination of the Upper GI resident team, including allocation of ward, theatre and clinic activities.
• Attendance at specialist outpatient clinics, operating lists, endoscopy sessions and multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Provision of out-of-hours and weekend Upper GI cover alongside consultant colleagues.
• Active participation in clinical governance, quality improvement, audit and outcomes reporting, including morbidity and mortality review and national database submissions.
• Contribution to the teaching and training of medical students, foundation doctors, core trainees and higher surgical trainees.
• Participation in research and service development activities within a leading academic and tertiary referral centre.
