Senior Clinical Fellow in Transplantation and Renal Surgery

Job overview

This post would suit trainees wishing to pursue a career in transplantation, general surgery or urology. It provides an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in pre/post-operative management of surgical patients in a busy transplant environment and to develop basic general surgical/vascular/urological technical skills. Those wishing to improve their academic portfolio will be supported to do so.

The post will incorporate ward and on-call commitments as well as theatre and outpatient commitments. There will be an opportunity to work on Audit or a Quality Improvement project. The post will therefore suit individuals who wish to develop these areas. The postholder will be supervised by a Transplant Surgery Consultant as well as the Transplant medical team with whom they will be working closely.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

The post holder will, along with other junior colleagues be responsible for:

a. Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required

b. Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

Proposed timetable:

The exact time table would be determined after discussion with Clinical Lead for Transplant to consider the educational needs of the post holder along with those of other junior surgical colleagues. However broadly speaking it would involve the following:

• Participation in Consultant led ward rounds
• Participation in at least one transplant or surgical clinic a week
• Attendance at 2 in-patient theatre sessions per week
• 1 session per week for research / quality improvement / audit

Clinical sessions will involve pre- and post-operative assessment of dialysis access, transplant urology and general surgery patients.

On call commitment:

The post holder will undertake a 1 in 10 (or higher) on call rota. This will be resident on call. This will involve covering dialysis and transplant patients based at Guy’s & St Thomas sites and may involve travel for organ retrievals. Please note the banding of the rota is subject to change and will be confirmed at the interview stage.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Research:

Clinical Research undertaking as part of the Trust research and development will be encouraged and able facilities for research exist.

Training of junior staff:

The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:

The post holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Clinical Governance:

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours:

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.

All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD guidelines

Educational Programme:

Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. However the post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc.

Appraisal:

All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal.
