Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from individuals seeking specialist training in Hand and Wrist Surgery.   The Plastic Surgery Department at St Thomas’ have five Plastics Hand Surgery Consultants performing a wide range of hand and wrist procedures for elective and trauma patients. The workload will involve assessing and managing hand trauma in our Hand Trauma Unit and Day Surgery Unit. There will be equal exposure to elective work which includes, for example, treatment for nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytren’s disease, post-trauma reconstruction, arthroplasty, wrist arthroscopy, open wrist surgery and Epidermolysis Bullosa. The post is based at St Thomas’ training predominantly in adult hand and wrist surgery, but there will also be opportunities to visit the Evelina Children’s Hospital (within St Thomas’) to gain exposure to congenital hand surgery and to visit the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, to observe brachial plexus/peripheral nerve management.

Fellowships have particular emphasis on clinical exposure to multi-disciplinary management. You will gain excellent training in both clinic and theatre, with the aim of training you to assess, perform and manage a range of hand surgery procedures.

Due to the clinical demands of this post, it is aimed at individuals who have completed their FRCS (Plast) or who are post-accreditation, but seeking further specialist hand surgery training. We would encourage all fellows to undertake the British or European Hand Diploma.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
  • Having progressive charge of post operative care of patients.
  • Supporting SHOs and Trust Doctors to assess patients in the A&E department and to make appropriate decisions about their treatment.
  • Participating in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
  • Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Clinical:

The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:

(a)        Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.

(b)        Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

Training of junior staff:

The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that postholder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:

The postholder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Clinical Governance:

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management.  They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Educational Programme:

Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. However the postholder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc.

Essential

  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council

  • Previous experience in surgery and clinical care of patients undergoing hand surgery

Qualifications and Training:

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise
  • FRCS(Plast) or equivalent

Desirable

  • Undertaking the Hand Surgery Diploma

Leadership and Management Skills:

Essential

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately with patients and other professionals
  • Ability to manage own and other’s time effectively
  • Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management

Desirable

  • Management training or qualification
  • Evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services
