Job overview

The Senior Clinical Fellow is a senior non-training grade doctor who plays a key role in the delivery of high-quality emergency care while providing clinical leadership and operational support within the Emergency Department (ED). Working closely with Emergency Medicine Consultants, senior nursing staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team, the post holder will contribute to the safe, efficient, and effective management of patients attending the department.

In addition to maintaining a substantial clinical workload, the Lead SCF will act as a role model for junior medical staff, supporting supervision, education, rota management, quality improvement initiatives, governance activities, and service development. The role provides an excellent opportunity for doctors seeking to develop leadership, management, teaching, and quality improvement skills alongside their clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assess patients and initiate treatments and management plans. They will be expected to work in all areas of the department i.e. Majors, Resus, Urgent treatment Centre, Paediatrics, Same day Emergency Care and the ED short stay unit. As well as seeing their own patients the post holder will also be required to supervise junior doctors and provide clinical support. They will also provide leadership support in terms of managing flow through the department, and to attend MDT meetings such as safeguarding meetings and clinical governance days.

This post would be suitable for a doctor working at senior registrar level who would be expected to be capable of leading the department overnight and supervise the junior team with on-call consultant support.
