Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to train in adult congenital heart disease catheter intervention. The fellowship is for 12 months, extendable up to 24 months and will be based mainly at the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI). There may be access to some sessions in the paediatric cardiac catheterisation laboratory depending on the successful applicant’s experience and training needs.

The adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) catheter interventional service has one of the highest case volumes in the UK and offers the whole range of procedures. The team have been at the forefront of innovation in congenital cardiac catheterisation as well as early adopters of new technology and procedures.

The ACHD interventional cardiology team consists of three interventional consultants, supported by two peri-procedural imaging consultants and a cath lab team of skilled nurses, physiologists and radiographers.

The ACHD team consists of 5 full-time ACHD Consultant Cardiologists, 4 congenital cardiac surgeons, 3 ACHD clinical fellows, 4 specialist ACHD nurses, an MDT co-ordinator and full admin support. The unit is closely linked with adult cardiac services and the Paediatric Cardiology Services at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Main duties of the job

The BHI provides secondary and tertiary cardiac services in a purpose-built environment, with an outpatient department, 3 cardiology wards, a coronary care unit, a cardiac daycase unit, a cardiac intensive care unit, 5 dedicated catheterisation labs (including a bi-plane lab), a full range of imaging facilities and full cardiac surgical programme. We provide congenital heart disease services for approximately 6 million people throughout the south-west of England with additional interventional services for South Wales.

This post is suitable for senior trainees in cardiology or trainees who have completed their training who would like to develop their skills in congenital cardiac catheterisation. Experience in cath lab interventions (congenital, structural or coronary) is mandatory as this is a senior role, designed to train the successful appointee so that they can embark on a consultant career in this field. Skills in echocardiography and an understanding of transoesophageal echo are mandatory. There will be no on call commitment included in this role.

The successful appointee will have the following duties: Two/ three whole days in the cath lab, two weekly outpatient clinics, weekly ACHD multidisciplinary team meeting. They will be expected to liasie with and work closely with Admissions, Clinical Nurse Specialist and National data audit teams. They will be expected to take part in departmental audits and there may be opportunities for research.
