Main duties of the job

The Anaesthetic department at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust covers a wide variety of elective, day case, and emergency surgery on two main sites. We currently cover one Intensive care unit and one High Dependency Unit, two obstetrics units and provide elective anaesthesia at both sites. Emergency surgery of all specialties is concentrated at St Helier Hospital, while the majority of the elective work is performed at Epsom General Hospital. The post holder will be encouraged to attend weekly educational departmental meetings which occur on both sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

On Call Duties:

  • The post holder will be required to be on call at either Epsom or St Helier Hospital.
  • The senior clinical fellow will be supported at all times by the Consultants and be expected to supervise junior fellows. As per experience and seniority, the on call rota slot will be allocated either on the senior tier (labour ward and paediatric emergencies) or junior tier (StH theatres or Epsom HDU).

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 24 months experience in anaesthetics (international experience considered)
  • Provider or instructor in ATLS, APLS, ALS or similar

Desirable

  • 6 months UK experience in anaesthetics
  • 3 months independent experience in obstetric anaesthesia
  • UK Core training completed (or equivalent experience)

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registration with GMC
  • MBBS or equivalent

Desirable

  • Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • Recognised RCoA approved anaesthetic qualification

Non Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements

Teaching/Research/Governanace

Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance and participation in audit
  • Current successful appraisal and revalidation
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates
  • Presentations at postgraduate meetings

Desirable

  • Evidence of research and/or publications
  • Evidence of audit projects
  • Ability to teach junior staff
