The Dementia Assessment and Support Service (DASS) in Shrewsbury is delighted to offer two vacancies for Senior Assistant Psychologists. These will be on a 12 months fixed term contract and working 37.5 hours per week.
There is an expectation that for these senior roles, you will have appropriate experience of working in a clinical setting, preferably as part of a multidisciplinary team. We particularly welcome applications from those with previous assistant psychologist experience or those from a research background with experience of working with clinical populations.
Most of your time will focus on working with individuals and carers on behaviours that challenge in dementia, often within paid care settings. There will however be opportunities to provide input into the assessment and diagnosis arm of our service, primarily in the administration and interpretation of standardised psychometric tests.
In the role you will be providing input across a wide geographical area, a substantial degree of traveling will be required to successfully fulfil the demands of the role.
Under the clinical supervision of a qualified psychologist: Undertake assessments of behaviours that challenge (BtC) in dementia including psychological characteristics, dimensions and factors relevant to the development, maintenance and understanding of the client's difficulties.
This may be using standardised psychometric instruments, protocol-based assessment tools, self- and informant-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and structured and semi-structured interviews as required.
Under supervision of a qualified psychologist, performs assessment of cognition as part of the assessment and diagnosis process within the service, including the application, scoring and reporting of psychometric measures.
Assist in the formulation of the client's difficulties and in the planning and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of the client's problems in community and care settings.
Deliver therapeutic interventions guided by the qualified psychologist or otherwise defined by protocol, for individual clients and for families, including interventions for BtC using the "6D Dementia" model that the service is implementing.
Interviews for this post will be held at one of our clinical bases in Shropshire in May 2026. Interviews will be exclusively offered on a face-to-face basis.
We are particularly interested in providing support to colleagues within our Home Treatment teams (for those with an established dementia diagnosis whose care needs are more substantial) in the implementation of the “6D Dementia” model for providing dementia care (https://www.6ddementia.com). We are currently in the process of training our staff team in the 6D model and anticipate that a substantial part of the assistant psychologist role will be in supporting implementation, evaluating outcomes and acting as an ambassador for the 6D model within the service.
