Senior Accountant (Costing & Analytics) – NHS Borders

Agenda for Change Band 7 £52,845 - £61,466 per annum

Full Time (36 hours)

Permanent

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified/final stage (CCAB/CIMA) with a specialist interest in costing to develop and implement the Health Board’s approach to patient-level costing and finance analytics.

About the Role

You will work closely with Finance Business Partners, Clinicians, Service Management and other support functions to develop a new costing model which links patient activity to costs, and to report on the outputs of this costing model.

Working with the Senior Finance Manager you will help modernise the directorate’s approach to business analytics and support quality improvement within the directorate, including review of how information is gathered, stored and utilised.

You will be responsible for preparing annual costing returns which report on the Board’s costs and activity and will take a lead on financial benchmarking, comparing the costs of NHS Borders with other similar healthcare organisations.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an individual with a desire to influence how health services are delivered by working collaboratively with clinicians to understand and model the costs and activities of patient level treatment and service delivery.

You will have a previous experience in managing complex financial and non-financial data together with a high level of IT literacy and a strong understanding of cost accounting and business analytics.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a collaborative approach to working with stakeholders to improve the use of data analysis to drive decision-making.

About the Board/Region

NHS Borders is responsible for the provision of health services to the population of the Scottish Borders. The Scottish Borders is one of the least densely populated areas within mainland Scotland with a population of around 116,000 people spread across over 4,700 km2.

Our services cover primary care, community, mental health, maternity and acute healthcare. Facilities include a district general hospital (Melrose), four community hospitals, and more than twenty other separate health centres and other facilities.

Our new organisational strategy sets out the Board’s strategic vision and our aspirations for how we will strengthen the delivery of high quality, efficient and effective health services to meet the needs of our population. In this role you will work closely with our senior finance team to support improvement in the directorate’s costing and analytics and how this is used to in the development of plans to enable delivery of this vision.

As from 1st April 2026 the Agenda for Change full-time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part time hours will be reduced pro-rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.

If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team. As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre-settled status. For specific types of post, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible (though not guaranteed) to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa.
