Job Summary

The role of the Physiotherapy Technical Instructor is to deliver patient centred care and to support physiotherapists to carry out interventions. Opportunities may arise in hospital, musculoskeletal outpatients and community teams within both adult and children’s services.

In order to meet the overall mission of the Trust the post holder will

Assist a physiotherapist during patient assessment and treatment sessions and / or carry out prescribed interventions as delegated by a physiotherapist with or without direct supervision

Maintain written and electronic records in accordance with professional / departmental and Trust standards.

Assist with departmental and administration duties.

Ensure clinical environments are maintained in compliance with health and safety guidance

Main duties and responsibilities

The post holder will

Assist physiotherapists with assessment and treatments to facilitate patient care.

Carry out treatment programmes as prescribed by a physiotherapist, e.g. walking practice, exercise and physical activity programmes, positioning and use of standing frames or other specialised equipment

Follow identified protocols in observing and reporting changes in the patient‘s condition as necessary.

Progress treatment programmes within parameters agreed with qualified staff for individual patients either on an individual basis or in a group setting

Provide equipment/appliances as recommended by the physiotherapist and instruct patient in safe use/application of same.

Record treatment intervention in the patient notes in accordance with Trust and department guidelines.

With the guidance of qualified staff teach/advise patients in self-management of their condition (involving carers where appropriate) and provide appropriate information.

Carry out group activities for specific patient groups as delegated by the physiotherapist e.g. strength and balance classes for children and adults, orthopaedic rehab

Assist with the running of other classes e.g. Chest Heart and Stroke programmes

Within schools assist with delivery of hydrotherapy sessions to include assisting with dressing, toileting and transferring

Transport patients to and from the physiotherapy department for treatment as required

Prepare, clean, sterilise and transport equipment and appliances.

Undertake control of infection duties relating to equipment /therapy appliance

Preparation of clinical area for assisting in specific clinics e.g. injection clinics

Carry out clerical / administrative duties e.g. filing, stock control, making appointments, gathering and collating statistical information which will include at times covering for admin staff

Carry out general housekeeping duties e.g. general tidiness of the department, changing laundry, cleaning equipment.

Use electronic systems to ensure adequate levels of stock within relevant departments and order/ receipt non-stock items as directed with oversight from senior staff.

Participate in evening and weekend duties for services as required.
