Prison Healthcare are recruiting a number of Senior Primary Care Nurse Band 6 posts. Nurses registered on Part 1 of the NMC Live Register in Adult, Mental Health and Learning Disability are eligible to apply; however please note posts will be allocated in line with Service requirements.
Waiting List – please note a waiting list may be created for future perm / temp full time, part time, bank Senior Primary Care Nurse Band 6 opportunities that may arise within Primary Care Teams based within HMP Maghaberry within the next 12 months.
The post holder will work as an effective member of the Primary Healthcare Team, delivering high quality care and treatment within a custodial environment that is in line with that provided in the community. They will provide day to day management and professional leadership to a team of nurses within the prison environment and will work in collaboration with the wider multi-disciplinary team and with colleagues in the Northern Ireland Prison Service. They will be responsible for ensuring the timely and effective response to healthcare emergency situations and provision of appropriate care including onward referral and care arrangements as necessary.
They will be designated to take charge of the healthcare centre on a regular basis and to deputise for the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse when required.

Clinical/Professional/Specific Managerial Responsibilities
The post holder will focus and lead under the direction of the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse on the following key areas, within the organisation’s governance framework:

Assist the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure that systems and processes are in place to support effective mentoring of relevant staff.

To maintain a safe and clean environment for staff, patients / clients and visitors by ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and protocols including health and safety, healthcare associated infection, risk management and critical incident reporting.
Ensure staff awareness of environmental issues and take appropriate action as per HSC Trust policy.
Assist the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse with the analysis, assessment and management of actual and potential risks to health and well-being.
Ensure safe and effective use of equipment as per HSC Trust policy.
Ensure near misses, incidents, accidents and faulty devices are recorded, reported, investigated and learning disseminated as per HSC Trust policy.
Multi-professional working
Contribute to the establishment of systems and processes to ensure effective communication and continuity of patient / client care, liaising with multi-disciplinary / multi-agency teams, community services and colleagues within the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
Contribute to the Prisoner Safety and Support and Supporting Prisoners at Risk (SPAR) processes, sharing relevant information to assist effective risk assessment and management plans

Assist the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse to develop person-centered care within the ward / department.
Promote a caring environment where equality and diversity issues are respected and patients / clients and their carers’ are enabled to be partners in their care.
Assist the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse to develop strategies for communication between staff, patients / clients, relatives and their carers, showing awareness of barriers to understanding.
Communicate between all members of the multi-disciplinary / multi-agency team, and across care settings in a manner consistent with the post.

Support the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure effective admission / discharge planning with relevant multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams as required.
2.3 Patient / client involvement
Identify opportunities to the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse for meaningful involvement of patients / clients and carers in relation to the development of care and services.
Assist the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure effective systems are in place to gain patient / client and carers’ feedback on their experience of care.
Ensure compliments and complaints are managed in line with HSC Trust policy including the dissemination of shared learning.

3.2 Staff Management and Develop team performance
Acts up in the absence of the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse as required.

Promote the health and well-being of staff and observe for any signs of ill health or stress factors in staff assigned to the area and take appropriate action in line with HSC Trust policies and NMC guidelines.
Assist the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse to manage duty rotas / annual leave and study leave to ensure adequate nursing cover and appropriate skill mix.

Challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of care fall below that which the Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse would expect.
Ensure best use of resources within the ward / department and ensure services are managed in accordance with yearly financial instructions.
