Job overview

We are seeking an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Technician to join our Team.

As post holder you will undertake abdominal ultrasound scanning on eligible men as part of the Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and West Suffolk community based AAA Screening Programme. You will ensure abdominal ultrasound scanning is undertaken to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures. Travel to each of the screening venues across the large geographical area is required which includes GP surgeries, local hospitals, health centres and occasionally prisons.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, caring and sensitive individual who can keep calm under pressure, break news to patients with a newly identified aneurysm, demonstrate excellent organisational skills and prioritise their own workload. The role requires highly developed physical skills where a degree of precision and a high level of hand, eye and sensory coordination are essential.

Access to a car, a clean driving licence and business insurance is essential as you will be required to use your own vehicle to transport the ultrasound equipment to the various venues across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and West Suffolk.

Hours of work will be 08.30-16.30, full-time 5 days.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to attend the office base at Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust for part of your training period but will also be working in community clinics across the Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and West Suffolk region. A level of travel time is allocated to the working day and mileage expenses applicable under AfC.

AAA Screening technicians are expected to work autonomously and are required to explain the implications of screening, obtain informed consent, perform ultrasound examinations, discuss test results and provide reassurance and information when an aneurysm is identified.

Flexibility is high on the agenda due to having short notice changes. A good team player is essential with the ability to work alone confidently making unsupervised judgements on patient enquiries and problems. You will need the ability to work under pressure and work to tight deadlines.

No experience in ultrasound is necessary but healthcare experience would be beneficial. The successful applicant will undertake the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners. This includes ultrasound training and diploma over a 6-24 month period to ensure high standards of scanning are met in accordance with national standard operating procedures, an independent assessment of ultrasound technique and theoretical written units and e-learning. Following successful completion, you will work independently and make judgements according to experience and training.
