Join our friendly team at our Hadleigh charity shop as a Weekend Sales Assistant! In this role, you’ll play a key part in creating a welcoming environment for our customers, providing excellent service, and supporting the day-to-day running of the shop.
Working 7.5 hours per week, you’ll help serve customers, handle transactions, and keep the shop looking its best. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a community-focused organisation, meet new people, and make a real difference through your work.

Main duties of the job
Working closely with the Manager and Assistant Manager, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience in key retail operations, including cashing up the till and supporting the smooth running of the shop.
You’ll also take pride in maintaining a clean, tidy, and welcoming environment, ensuring that stock is attractively displayed and the shop always looks its best for our customers.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To effectively manage the day to day running of the shop staff and volunteers supporting the Shop Manager as required.
- To manage stock, maximise profit and minimise costs, and achieve sales targets, initiating marketing campaigns and sales promotions.
- Take responsibility for managing the shop in the Shop Manager’s absence.
- To maintain and develop good channels of communication with colleagues in other Havens Hospices Shops, local communities, and organisations.
- To provide cover for other Assistant Shop Managers from time to time in other stores, as required by your Area Manager.
- To assist in developing the shop’s ecommerce business
- To make day–to–day decisions to ensure the successful and safe trading operation of the shop.
- To decide, without reference, but with procedural guidelines, what prices to charge for individual items to maximise both turnover and income, accepting, sorting, pricing, and displaying goods for sale to maximise income within agreed guidelines.
- Ensure the shop is kept clean and tidy and goods are displayed in an attractive and presentable manner.
- Ensure that all statutory responsibilities are met, including Fire and Health & Safety regulations, and security procedures, ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety and other organisational policies and procedures is monitored and cascaded to all staff and volunteers within the shop.
- To inform the Shop Manager of necessary repairs and maintenance.
- To assist the Shop Manager to supervise and maximise the efficiency of the collection system, ensuring that all goods sold comply with safety and other legislative requirements.
- To adhere to Charity merchandising and window dressing standards.
- To control stock density and rotation.
- To assist the Shop Manager to coordinate the work of the staff and volunteers in accordance with Havens Hospices policies and procedures.
