Band 5 Rotational Occupational Therapists - fulfil your potential in hospitals that make history: Charing Cross, Hammersmith, St Mary’s, Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea and Western Eye
We and pleased to announce that we have opportunities (substantive and fixed term contracts) for enthusiastic OTs to join our Band 5 Occupational Therapy rotation which operates across our 3 main sites: St Mary’s hospital - the major trauma centre for the North West London network, Charing Cross hospital which is a specialist stroke and neuroscience centre and Hammersmith hospital where the specialist heart attack centre is situated.
Rotations take place every six months with rotations in; elective orthopaedics, orthopaedic trauma, surgical rehab and cardiology, renal medicine, stroke, neurology & neurosurgery, respiratory medicine, acute medicine, major trauma, Charing Cross Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (CNRU), medicine for the elderly, elderly rehabilitation, community (falls team or bedded rehab), hand therapy and oncology. All Band 5s are expected to undertake a mixture of rotations across the 3 sites. Please note now to avoid any disappointment later, it will not be possible to undertake all your rotations within one clinical specialism eg neurosciences, or at one particular site.
Main duties of the job
- To plan and deliver a patient centred therapy service to patients in hospital and in the community.
- To be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care.
- To routinely provide advice, education and support to patients and their carers as part of the therapy process. To adopt a patient centred treatment approach in order to support meaningful participation in life roles.
- To demonstrate effective communication skills when attending and contributing to ward rounds, meetings and case conferences relating to caseload.
- To be responsible for maintaining accurate andcomprehensive patient records in line with the legal requirements, trust guidelines and professional standard of practice.
- To collect, collate and reports statistical information in line with departmental and trust policy.
- To develop clinical and teaching skills via continuous personal and professional development (CPPD), including maintenance of an up to date CPPD portfolio.
- To participate in the Band 5 peer support group.
- Build and sustain professional relationships both as an independent practitioner and collaboratively as a member of the team.

Experience
Essential
- Experience in managing physical disability
- Wide range of experience in training /clinical placements
- Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of therapy intervention.
- Liaison with professional colleagues, carers and relatives in the hospital and community.
- Experience in a clinical setting of application of professional standards and codes of conduct.
- Experience of using evidence based practice.
Desirable
- Recent junior experience in a structured rotational scheme.
- Knowledge of clinical governance issues in relation to patient care
Education/ Qualifications
Essential
- Professional degree qualification in relevant profession Occupational Therapy
- HCPC registration
Desirable
- Membership of Professional Body
- Membership of a specialist section.
- Degree classification upper second class honours or above (or equivalent)
Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to treat patients individually and in groups.
- Able to use in depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to inform clinical decision making.
- Ability to manage a clinical caseload and cope with pressures and prioritisation of caseload.
- Make prompt decisions based on knowledge/experience and circumstances.
- Ability to reflect on and critically appraise own performance.
- The ability to appreciate the sensitivity and complexity of patients’ culture and diversity and the ability to provide services appropriate to individuals’ needs.
- Ability to receive and impart sensitive information related to disability and loss of function.
- Ability to deal with distressing or demanding situations involving profound disability, life threatening situations, bereavement and/or death.
- Ability to positively manage exposure to patients and environments, which may be highly distressing, antagonistic, open to aggression and unpleasant.

- Recording and reporting assessments and treatments accurately and concisely.
- Understand and implement appropriate standards, including risk management, in all work undertaken.
