The post holder will supervise, support and hand over their career insights to future students and both newly-qualified and experienced staff across Midwifery services at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital.
The role of the Legacy Midwife is also to work with education leads, nursing and midwifery Legacy post-holders and the Beds, Luton and Milton Keynes (BLMK) Legacy Lead to provide support within the work place fully utilising the opportunities that Legacy roles provide across the health and care pathways.
Success of this role will ensure that a senior experienced midwife will have the opportunity to feel a sense of achievement at the end of a career – leave on a ‘positive note’ and reduce ‘burn out’ at the end of a career in Midwifery.
Main duties of the job
Increase sustainable student placement opportunities across focused areas of service at Bedford Hospital by providing a dedicated role to work in partnership with the midwifery educators to develop specific learning outcomes.
Provide pastoral care and support to students and qualified staff.
Develop strategies to reduce attrition and turnover.
Review data around recruitment and retention and working with the Lead Midwifery Educator to generate reports.
They will actively participate in the process for exit interviews, identifying and collating themes and trends, using this data within their reporting process.
Working with Legacy Midwife on sister site in the area to provide equity of service provision and best practice. The post holder will be required to collaborate for cross site working with their counterpart (BH / L&D)
The Legacy Midwife will work with education teams to develop blended learning approaches to support the transfer of learning/skill attainment, giving students and newly-qualified staff the extended time needed in a different kind of coaching environment, that is flexible and meets everyone’s needs (virtual, face to face etc.)
Work in conjunction with the Practice Development teams and Lead Midwifery Clinical Educator to plan internal clinical practice assessment for students and newly qualified staff.

Knowledge
Essential
- • Ability to carry out complex assessments and analysis
- • Understanding of professional ethics and application in practice
- • Knowledge of UK health legislation and current practice
- • IT literate, including ability to use electronic patient records, word processing and e-mail
- • Knowledge of the principles of Clinical Governance and its implications for the therapy service
- • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
- • Health, safety and risk awareness
- • Able to present information, written and orally in a clear logical manner.
- • Ability to cope with stressful situations/environments
- • Awareness of the other Multi-disciplinary team member roles and be able to refer where appropriate
Desirable
- • Evidence of participation in research/audit
Experience
Essential
- • Extensive post-graduate experience within the NHS and/or other sectors and across all core clinical areas.
- • Previous experience of supervision and clinical education of Students and newly-qualified staff
- • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- • Demonstration of ability to prioritise workload and caseload management
- • Specialist knowledge of mentorship, education and development practice
Desirable
- • Involvement in audit research and understanding quality issues.
- • Responsibility as clinical educator for students
Qualifications
Essential
- • 1st Degree in focused area
- • NMC Registered
- • Evidence of relevant post-graduate courses/CPD
- • Masters level (or equivalent level) of learning/training in the subject area
