Detailed job description and main responsibilities
St. George’s is a busy London surgical tertiary neonatal unit that works closely with its nationally commissioned specialist Fetal Medicine Unit. We offer all modes of respiratory support and are the only UK neonatal unit to offer Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) ventilation and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) to all infants. NAVA provides synchronized proportionate inflations by detecting electrical activity of the diaphragm via a modified nasogastric tube. From June 2019 we implemented NAVA such that all our respiratory support devices have since been replaced by SERVO-n® Maquet Getinge ventilators, the only device on the market that delivers neonatal NAVA. A comprehensive programme has successfully delivered the project, made it routine care (QI Storyboard: Introducing NAVA | British Association of Perinatal Medicine (bapm.org)). The neonatal respiratory service collaborates with the Paediatric Respiratory team, fetal and paediatric cardiologists, neonatologists certified in echocardiography who also perform POCUS including lung ultrasound.
