Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist to join our friendly and progressive Respiratory Physiology team. The post holder will be responsible for delivering a range of diagnostic respiratory and sleep investigations, including spirometry, lung function testing, exercise testing, overnight oximetry and sleep studies, supporting the diagnosis and management of patients with respiratory and sleep disorders.

Working under the supervision of senior physiologists, the post holder will provide high-quality patient care, ensure accurate data collection and analysis, maintain clinical equipment, and contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives. The role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including consultants, specialist nurses and allied health professionals, to support the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform a range of routine diagnostic tests within respiratory physiology and sleep services under supervision.
  • Assist in maintaining efficient patient flow and service delivery.
  • Undertake tests including spirometry, basic lung function, FeNO, and limited sleep studies.
  • Assist with CPAP setup and patient education under supervision.
  • Support accurate data entry and record keeping.
  • Contribute to high standards of patient care and safety.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical placement or experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience working with patients in a clinical or care environment
  • Demonstrates understanding of patient care and communication

Desirable

  • Experience in performing basic lung function testing (e.g. spirometry)
  • Exposure to sleep diagnostics or CPAP therapy
  • Participation in audit or quality improvement activities
  • Experience with capillary blood sampling (desirable not essential)

Qualifications

Essential

  • Holds a healthcare science degree/ or equivalent.
  • Eligibility for RCCP/AHCS/HCPC registration (or willingness to work towards registration)

Desirable

  • Working towards ARTP Part 1 (or equivalent)
  • Postgraduate short courses in respiratory or sleep physiology (e.g. ARTP/BTS/ERS)
