Job summary

The Resident Doctor Peer Lead is responsible, alongside the Board Lead, for championing and overseeing initiatives that improve the working lives and wellbeing of Resident Doctors.

The role ensures Resident Doctors' voices are heard at the highest level and that the organisation maintains strong, transparent, and accountable systems to support them throughout their training.

The RDPL will help drive local change to support trainee welfare, equity, and professional development.

Main duties of the job

1. Implementation of Resident Doctor Welfare Initiatives

  • Facilitate Trust-level initiatives to deliver on the NHS England 10-Point Plan for Resident Doctor wellbeing.
  • Provide expert advice and feedback to operational colleagues on monitoring and reporting progress to the Trust Board and Resident Doctors.
  • Prepare reports for the Board, Trust committees, and external bodies as required.
  • Ensure alignment with national and regional NHS England guidance and timelines.
  • Advocate for protected time and space for self-directed learning, portfolio work, and rest.
  • Support the development/enhancement of rest areas, on-call facilities, access to hot meals/snacks, and adequate locker space.
  • Promote and encourage the use of Exception Reporting systems.

2. Peer Representation & Advocacy

  • Act as the representative voice of Resident Doctors, advocating their perspectives at Trust Board and senior management meetings.
  • Escalate systemic issues raised by peers to senior leadership and educational governance processes, collaborating to find pragmatic solutions.
  • Proactively solicit feedback from Resident Doctors across departments and rotations, ensuring diverse and equitable representation.
  • Serve as a point of contact for queries, concerns, or suggestions from Resident Doctors.
  • Develop and embed mechanisms for ongoing listening (surveys, forums, focus groups).
  • Participate in local Trust meetings established to deliver and monitor progress against the 10-point programme.
