Job overview

This post will be a joint role comprising 0.6 WTE research and 0.4 WTE clinical activity, with the post holder operationally aligned to the Urology Directorate. The role will support delivery of urology research alongside direct clinical service provision.

The post holder will contribute to the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway, including supporting and, where appropriately trained and competent, assisting with transperineal prostate biopsy procedures within clinic settings.

There will be a requirement to work across sites, including travel to Workington Community Hospital / Community Diagnostic Centre, to support pathway delivery and service development.

The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT), including urology, radiology, oncology, specialist nurses and allied health professionals, ensuring seamless integration of research and clinical care within the patient pathway.

This is initially a fixed-term post, with anticipated scope to extend up to 24 months (2 years) subject to service need, funding availability, and successful delivery of role objectives.

Main duties of the job

Research:

  • Work independently to manage caseload of research participants whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure service delivery.
  • Provide research information to patients and their relatives.
  • Act as a resource and support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of clinical research.
  • Ensure that the study-specific investigations are undertaken as required by the research protocol, to establish eligibility and safety to enter the study.
  • Facilitate the informed consent process, in compliance with the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ensuring that the patient and relatives fully understand the nature of the research.
  • Provide ongoing follow-up care whilst the patient is in the research study.

Clinical:

The job purpose is to support the Urological service which is currently offering Monday – Friday out-patients services for Urological patients requiring diagnostic or therapeutic interventions for a variety of Urological conditions.

Our current service delivery includes urodynamic assessments, diagnostic flexible cystoscopy lists, trial without catheter clinics, prostate biopsy clinics, lithotripsy treatment for renal stones, complex catheter clinics, etc. The main role of this post holder will be to support with prostate biopsy clinics.
