Job overview

The Research Intern role will enhance the Trust's research capabilities in unscheduled emergency and urgent care by supporting ongoing and new research projects under the guidance of the Paramedic Senior Research Fellow.

This role offers a unique opportunity for aspiring undergraduate students with an interest in research to directly contribute to the improvement of patient outcomes through rigorous research practices, data analysis, and active participation in ongoing studies and studies in design within the Trust. The internship aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application in a real-world healthcare setting, fostering a deeper understanding of prehospital care challenges and advancing the Trust's commitment to evidence-based practice and innovation.

Main duties of the job

During the internship, the primary responsibility will be for the intern to shadow the Paramedic Senior Research Fellow or the study Principal Investigator in both the planning and execution phases of research projects.

This includes the development of study protocols and preparation of research materials. The intern will conduct literature reviews to aid in developing research proposals and to stay informed on current trends in prehospital care research. Additionally, the intern will clean and prepare data from various sources such as electronic patient care records, clinical trials data, and peer-reviewed literature.

The intern will also shadow research paramedics in setting up and executing clinical trials where appropriate, including patient recruitment, consent processes, and data management in ongoing research studies. Observing the ethical considerations and regulatory compliance required in conducting clinical research will be an integral part of the intern's learning process. Participation in educational workshops and seminars, part of the internship program, will enhance the intern's research skills and knowledge of planning and undertaking research in the ambulance service.

The intern's activities will include attending research team meetings and assisting in the preparation of reports, research papers, and conference posters that document the research activities and results.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Additionally, the intern will attend public and patient involvement groups alongside the members of the Research and Development Department  to better understand community needs and perspectives. Under the guidance of the Paramedic Senior Research Fellow and other senior team members in the research department, the intern will assist in managing project timelines and meeting milestones.

Please note, you must be currently employed by the NHS in order to be considered for this role as this is a short term assignment only.

You MUST also ensure that you can attend the 6-week timeframe stipulated at time of interview.
