Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Research Fellowship in Major Trauma Sciences for a 2-3 year period. The post is aimed at aspiring academic trauma surgeons who would like to attain a MD/PhD while maintaining and enhancing their major trauma clinical skills.

The post is based primarily in the Centre for Injury Studies, Imperial College and the Major Trauma Centre at St Mary's Hospital.

The post is funded by the Major Trauma Service, ICHNT and is focused on trauma-related research as part of the Centre for Injury Studies. It supports the Major Trauma Centre middle-grade rota (1:6 prospective cover). It would be suited to a trainee who has aspirations for a career as an academic surgeon with an interest in major trauma or an associated specialty.

Candidates must have worked in a Major Trauma System previously and have in-depth knowledge of the UK Major Trauma System.

Main duties of the job

The academic aim of the post is to plan, carry out and lead high quality programme of research in trauma-related sciences (major trauma, veteran-related healthcare, global post-conflict healthcare). The nature and scope of the project can be designed by the applicant with guidance from the research team.  The successful candidate will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals, attract external research funding and attain a MD/PhD or equivalent.

The clinical role of the post holder will be to support the consultants in Major Trauma and the Trauma Director in the delivery of the major trauma service and to provide expert clinical skills in leading the assessment and treatment of Major Trauma patients. The post holder will be expected to be gain experience in the acute and ongoing management of severely injured patients, including the ability to provide damage control surgery to the chest, abdomen, pelvis and vascular systems. The aim is to allow the Fellow to become proficient in the evaluation of critically-ill and injured patients; the initiation of appropriate and complete diagnostic and treatment plans; the development and implementation of patient care plans; providing leadership which facilitates the interaction within the entire team of caregivers and with the patients and their families.

A. Academic Key Responsibilities

• To lead and undertake research of the highest quality in the broad area of trauma related sciences
• Publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals
• Attend and present work at international conferences
• Obtain research grants from national and international funding bodies, and obtain funding from industry where appropriate
• Supervise postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students and undergraduate research projects
• To support the delivery of the Major Trauma clinical research collaborative, Traum@IC

B. Clinical Key responsibilities

• To act as a Major Trauma Service registrar on a 1:6 prospective rota
• To maintain high clinical standards in all aspects of the role
• To comply with Trust assurance and governance framework
• To engage with appraisal and revalidation process
• To exhibit Trust standards and Major Trauma Service Ethos at all times
