An opportunity has arisen for a Relief Porter to work within our Portering Department at New Cross Hospital. Working as part of the Team.

We are looking for enthusiastic self-motivated people who can work well on their own and as part of a team. You will be able to work in a specific area or, if you prefer, can be trained to work in a number of areas.

A Relief Porter is an ideal opportunity to gain experience of working in a hospital environment. This knowledge and experience can be helpful when permanent positions become available. .

You must have a flexible approach to work hours and to meet the demands of the job; this flexibility is something that you may also find suits your needs.

All training and uniform will be provided.

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive portering service to the New Cross Hospital site, showing care and compassion at all times. with excellent communication skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To collect post from wards.  Sort the post and deliver to appropriate areas of the Trust.

To collect deceased patients from the ward and take them to the Mortuary and complete the appropriate documentation.

To arrange viewing of deceased patients in the Mortuary out of hours in extreme situations in accordance with hospital policy.

To move patients in the Trust on beds, chairs and trolleys on request.

To deliver and collect urgent medical case notes for A & E Department, AMU and Children’s Ward.

To collect clinical and non-clinical waste from designated ward areas and take to the basement.

To collect dirty laundry from designated ward areas and take to the basement.

To replace medical gases on wards as requested taking the empty gas cylinders back to the designated holding stores.

To deliver pharmacy products to wards as per schedules.

To drive the internal patient ambulance when required.

To move equipment and furniture around the site on request.

To comply with the Bed Policy for replacement beds and mattresses, and the issue of beds from the Bed Store.

To change gas manifold banks as necessary.

To collect and deliver meal trolleys between the kitchens and the wards.

To collect and erect orthopaedic traction equipment and take to the designated ward.

To collect urgent specimens when the vacuum tube is out of order (out of hours only).

To deliver blood products to CCU out of hours and to wards in emergency situations.

The Porter will transfer the patients between beds, trolleys, chairs, X Ray and CT tables.

To respond to fast track requests.

To carry personal radio and pager.

To be proficient in the use of patient slides.

To be responsible for the care of patients during transportation to and from wards and departments on beds, stretchers and chairs.

To supply and connect patients to an oxygen supply prior to moving the patient from and on return to the wards from departments.

To deal with patients in your care that become violent and aggressive, and their relatives, before security attend.

To attend mandatory training and any other training deemed necessary for the post holder to carry out their duties.

To wear the uniform as issued and maintain an appearance at a standard commensurate with the duties and role of the post.

To wear an ID badge as issued in the interests of security in accordance with the Trust policy.

To comply with Statutory and Health Authority Policies on Health & Safety Regulations and Governance.
