Job overview

To work as a member of the Orthopaedic Therapy team assisting the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists to provide a high standard of patient care by undertaking delegated clinical duties.

The post holder will assist with the rehabilitation of Orthopaedic patients, progressing treatments in line with departmental protocols.  The post holder will also undertake administrative duties to support the functioning of the department. The workload will include outpatients, in patients and community working (e.g.  patient’s homes).

The post requires a flexible approach to working and requires the post holder to undertake weekend commitments as required.

Main duties of the job

Manage the rehabilitation of own caseload of patients as delegated by a therapist.

Assist with the care of patients as required in preparation for their treatment programme.

Provide treatment to patients in line with established treatment programmes.

Progress patients undergoing routine therapy programmes in line with established protocols, reporting back to the Orthopaedic Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist as required.

To be able to recognise change in the condition of a patient, and manage in accordance with local procedures.

Monitor patients’ physical and cognitive function whilst undertaking a range of activities and report changes to the Orthopaedic therapist.

To be able to measure and use identified outcome measures.

To apply, remove and progress the use of therapeutic equipment as instructed by the Physiotherapist.

To measure, adjust and supply equipment to patients in their own homes before discharge. To demonstrate to the patient and carer the safe usage of equipment.

To assess the safety of patients completing activities of daily living in line with agreed protocol.

To assist therapists with discharge planning.

To assist the Orthopaedic therapist with individual/group treatments/exercise classes.

To accurately record clinical interventions within the patient’s clinical records, in line with Therapy and Trust standards for documentation.

Person specification

Education

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent level of knowledge and skills gained through practical experience e.g. external courses, CPD portfolio, practical assessment through supervision/appraisal in a therapy unit/rehabilitation setting

Desirable

  • GCSE or equivalent in English and/or Maths

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience as a Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy assistant or rehabilitation assistant or similar
  • Evidence of ability to work without direct supervision
  • Experience of supervision of patients undergoing exercise as individuals
  • Training and learning in a related area and knowledge of a variety of orthopaedic conditions
  • Experience of faciltiating classes and or patient education
  • Able to communicate well and with people who have difficulty communicating
  • Good team working skills
  • Evidence of being self motivated and able to motivate patients
  • Able to manage own caseload of patients with routine conditions
  • Able to follow and progress prescribed clinical programmes with minimal or no imimediate supervision
  • Self motivated and aware of boundaries of own practice
  • Able to demonstrate decision making ability
  • Experience of assessing patient requiring walking aids/ other aids and instructing them in their correct and safe usage
  • IT skills
  • Able to learn new procedure and techniques and follow instructions
