Job overview

Applications are invited for the full-time post of Specialty Registrar in Respiratory and General Medicine. This is initially for a fixed term period of 12 months with the potential to extend. The successful candidate should have the relevant experience in respiratory at ST3+ or equivalent level.  They would be expected to offer a full-time commitment, which includes participation in the general medicine on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide medical cover for our inpatients in the respiratory ward and see referrals from other teams. They will also take part in outpatient clinics. They will be expected to deliver a keen and active role in day-to-day management of patients.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Evidence of good multidisciplinary team working and leadership supported by multi-source feedback or other workplace-based assessments
  • The ability to practice independently under consultant supervision and supervise and teach junior medical staff
  • Evidence of competence in management of medical emergencies and in-patients through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation if applicable
  • Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision where appropriate including performing Lumbar Punctures, Chest Drain insertion, Ascitic Drain insertion

Desirable

  • Evidence of a portfolio of audit projects where the audit loop has been closed

Additional & Aptitudes

Desirable

  • Evidence of enthusiasm for education and training
  • Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT IMPACT certification)
  • Demonstrate interest in an understanding of respiratory medicine
  • Evidence of involvement in management

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in respiratory medicine and a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core medical training or equivalent
  • Demonstrates an understanding of clinical governance
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in a range of medical procedures as an indication of manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Previous NHS experience

Desirable

  • Evidence of a formal training course in teaching methods

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • Demonstrate current ALS certification or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD
