An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated nurse to join our Rapid Diagnostic Centre (RDC) team as a Band 7 Specialist Nurse.

The Rapid Diagnostic Centre provides a streamlined diagnostic pathway for patients presenting with vague, non-specific symptoms that may indicate cancer or other serious conditions. As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you will play a pivotal role in coordinating patient pathways, delivering expert clinical assessment, supporting timely diagnosis, and ensuring an outstanding patient experience throughout their diagnostic journey.

This is an excellent opportunity for an autonomous and compassionate practitioner who is passionate about early diagnosis, service improvement, and person-centred care.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • Act as a specialist practitioner within the RDC service.
  • Undertake advanced holistic assessments of patients referred to the RDC pathway.
  • Coordinate and manage complex patient journeys from referral through to diagnosis and onward management.
  • Ensure patients receive timely investigations and results in line with national cancer targets and Trust standards.
  • Provide expert information, advice, and psychological support to patients and their families.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, primary care colleagues, cancer teams, diagnostic services, and allied health professionals.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to clinical decision-making.
  • Support service development, audit, quality improvement, and performance monitoring.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and education to junior staff and students.
  • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring high-quality, safe, and effective care.

Experience

Essential

  • Post-registration experience and knowledge in experience of cancer care and treatment cancer / palliative care or relevant subject
  • Experience of Clinical assessment & consultation skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level
  • Experience of undertaking clinical audit and benchmarking strategies.
  • Proven experience of implementing clinical governance

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrating the use of a variety of media/IT skills

Education and Qulification

Essential

  • First level registered nurse, current registration with NMC
  • Post graduate qualification as a band 6 for minimum 3 years
  • Evidence of continued professional development (accredited and non-accredited)

Desirable

  • Advanced Clinical Assessment, Non-Medical Prescribing, Advanced Nurse practitioner, Advanced Communications Skills Training
  • Master’s Degree or evidence working towards, in relevant area
