Radiology practice covers elective orthopaedic and rheumatological imaging arising from within the Trust and musculoskeletal referrals from local and regional hospitals. The Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries is located at the hospital. Other subspecialities include Spinal Disorders, Bone and Soft Tissue Tumours, Arthroplasty, a specialist Upper Limb Unit, Sports Knee, a specialist Foot and Ankle Unit, Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone disease, Rheumatology, Children’s Orthopaedics, and Neuromuscular and Locomotor disorders.

Cross sectional imaging includes MRI, CT and a musculoskeletal ultrasound and general ultrasound service. Interventional musculoskeletal radiology practice includes bone and soft tissue biopsies, peripheral joint arthrography, a wide range of spinal interventions, radiofrequency thermoablation and cryoablation of bone and soft tissue tumors, and a range of soft tissue injections.

There is a limited amount of non-orthopaedic work largely serving the local GP patient population but also covering investigation of some non-orthopaedic problems in orthopaedic/rheumatological patients.

Regular clinical and pathological conferences are held with specialist teams within the orthopaedic and spinal specialities. This includes the multidisciplinary tumour meeting attended by radiologists, pathologists and clinicians; active participation of the Fellows is encouraged.

The successful candidates will be actively encouraged to participate in audit/research projects. Full support facilities including computer and some secretarial support will be provided.

It is anticipated that the incumbents in the posts will produce publications during their post and contribute to radiological scientific meetings.

The hospital has just over 200 inpatient beds.

The Francis Costello Library provides a high quality multidisciplinary service to improve patient care and support clinical effectiveness research, education and lifelong learning for all, encouraging use of the evidence base in all aspects of RJAH activity to support the Trust to be the leading orthopaedic centre in the UK. The library offers over 4000 books and journals covering all health related disciplines but with a specialist emphasis on orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medicine.

Specialist journals are also available, many electronically via ATHENS password, and the library also provides an article request service for papers which are not available within our own stock.

Mediated literature searches, help and advice and a comprehensive information skills training programme are also available. The library works in close alliance with other health libraries within the area and in a recent survey of educational resources for doctors in training the Trust scored highly.
