Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a midwife to join our Quality Improvement Team and support our Lead Practice Development Midwife (PDM). We are looking for an experienced and dynamic individual with a strong interest in education within the clinical environment. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, an exceptional track record in clinical practice, experience of interprofessional working, and the ability to teach, support, and motivate others. A positive and flexible approach is essential, and you must be an effective team player. You will assist in the development and delivery of the multi-disciplinary training programmes ensuring compliance to national reporting requirements including the Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS).

As Deputy PDM your primary role will be to support the education and development of staff within the clinical area. You will also need to be able to maintain accurate records and produce relevant reports on training activity and evaluation. In the absence of the Lead PDM, you will facilitate and lead multi-disciplinary training such as PROMPT and Mandatory Maternity Training.

The post holder will contribute the multi-disciplinary clinical audit and governance activities. They will also assist with the review of published evidence including relevant national, regional and local reports.

This role may be combined with a clinical Band 6 role – please indicate how many additional clinical hours you would be interested in in your application.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the department in maintaining and improving high standards of care and achieving safety throughout the maternity footprint by working with the clinical and governance teams.

  • To support the maternity service in fostering an environment that is woman centred and upholds the highest standards of safety.
  • To work closely with clinical teams to facilitate and foster the clinical governance, risk agenda and continual quality improvement initiatives.
  • To understand new health care developments ensuring that midwifery practice is evidence based, cost effective and regularly benchmarked against best practice

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Quality Improvement:

To lead and support quality improvement projects within clinical teams

To support the develop of and maintain the audit and quality improvement plan

To undertake clinical audits

To present findings of audits undertaken at identified groups and directorate meetings

To ensure all quality improvement projects and audits are correctly registered with the audit department

Work closely with the audit department to ensure audit tools are robust and include explicit criteria relevant to each audit

To analyse the audit data and develop recommendations

To understand all national initiatives and assist in the implementation in order to influence patient care and service delivery

To be aware of and support local research projects as applicable

Develop and maintain up to date IT systems and databases relevant to your role

Clinical Effectiveness:

Maintain accurate, up to date records of all maternity guidelines

Co-ordinate the development and updating of all guidelines and patient information leaflets within the maternity footprint

Ensure policies are in the correct format and follow the appropriate approval process

Identify any gaps of non-compliance to the maternity guidelines from national standards

Where agreed recommendations are made from clinical audit relevant guidance is updated and changes in practice are implemented

To provide clinical and educational support for all levels of staff in the department

Help deliver a varied and interesting mandatory training programme

Understand national drivers influencing maternity education and how they apply to the SWFT maternity education programme

Participate in the programme of cascade training to help foster a learning culture within the workplace and embed into practice

Provide educational and project support in the clinical environment to all registered clinicians to help increase education of CTGs and peer reviewing

Provide a resource for support for the Band 5 midwifery preceptor programme

Support planning, developing and delivering the programme of work relating to the Maternity Information System throughout the Maternity Service

To ensure and facilitate in meeting the training needs of student midwives by providing a suitable learning environment and by engaging in clinical teaching where appropriate

Train staff in the use of relevant technologies as required and coach staff in the use of technology with clients/ parents

Develop and update MIS lesson plans for all users alongside the training team

Develop crib sheets for MIS users

Identify any clinical benefits and financial saving opportunities that arise from MIS

Manage user accounts ensuring the correct permissions are given

Liaise with the IT department and infrastructure engineer

Prepare draft reports and action plans for trust and local level committees as required

To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the maternity unit to whom staff, patients and their families can turn to for assistance, advice and support

To develop good working relationships with other ward / departments / agencies within and outside the Trust, ensuring that all stakeholders understand, respect and recognise the Trusts philosophy and operational policies

Attend all meetings relevant to the post relating to governance Ensure and facilitate robust methods of evidence collection for CQC requirements

Complete clinical midwifery shifts in all areas of maternity service when required.
