The Health Economics Unit is seeking a Health Economist Manager / Principal Health Economist to lead a portfolio of high-profile health economics, outcomes research and evaluation projects that shape decision-making across the NHS, academia and industry.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of healthcare innovation, leading complex economic evaluations, real-world evidence studies, advanced modelling projects and service transformation programmes. As a senior member of the team, you will play a key role in developing and supporting colleagues, overseeing quality and methodological excellence, building strong client relationships and contributing to the continued growth and success of the Health Economics Unit. You will work with senior leaders, clinicians, commissioners, academics and industry partners to generate evidence that improves outcomes, reduces inequalities and supports better use of healthcare resources.

Main duties of the job
- You will lead a portfolio of complex health economics, outcomes research and evaluation projects that support healthcare decision-making, innovation and service improvement across the NHS, academia and industry.
- As a senior member of the Health Economics Unit, you will combine technical expertise, project leadership and people management to deliver high-quality, impactful work that informs policy, commissioning and service transformation decisions.
- You will provide expert leadership in health economics, economic modelling and outcomes research, while remaining actively involved in some of the Unit’s most complex and strategically important projects.
- Working closely with clients, clinicians, commissioners, academics and industry partners, you will help define analytical approaches, oversee project delivery and communicate complex evidence to a wide range of audiences.
- The role includes line management and development of a designated group of staff, providing leadership, mentoring, technical guidance and quality assurance to support high performance and professional growth.
- You will oversee multiple projects and programmes simultaneously, ensuring delivery to agreed quality, budget and timescale requirements while maintaining excellent client relationships.

Experience
Essential
- Significant experience leading and delivering complex health economics, outcomes research, evaluation and modelling projects within healthcare settings.
- Experience developing and applying complex economic and decision analytic models including Markov models, decision trees, partitioned survival models and budget impact models
- Experience leading multiple projects or programmes simultaneously and ensuring delivery to agreed quality, budget and timescale requirements.
- Experience managing relationships with clients, senior stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience supervising, mentoring or line managing analysts, researchers or health economists.
- Experience using specialist analytical and modelling software such as Excel, R, Stata, Python or equivalent tools.
- Experience managing project budgets and resources.
- Experience working with national programmes, policy development or healthcare innovation initiatives.
Education/ qualifications
Essential
- Master's degree in Health Economics, Economics, Econometrics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Operational Research, Mathematics, Data Science or a related quantitative discipline; or a Master's degree containing substantial health economics, economic evaluation or outcomes research content.
- Alternatively, equivalent knowledge and experience gained through working in a senior health economics role
Desirable
- PhD or equivalent research experience in Health Economics, Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, Operational Research or a related discipline.
- Formal training in health technology assessment, economic evaluation, outcomes research or advanced decision modelling techniques.
- Evidence of continuing professional development in health economics, modelling
