Main duties of the job

Come and join our Adult Psychology service working within University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust (UHS) which is a provider of regional and tertiary acute physical care.

We are currently recruiting to roles working within the Major Trauma (0.5wte), the Spinal Cord Injury (0.5wte), and Teenage and Young Person’s Cancer Services (0.6wte).  These are established and valued roles. You will work with, and report to, the Consultant Psychologists within your clinical area to  provide psychologically informed care within MDT settings.

We promote flexible working and would be happy to discuss applications from candidates wishing to take on one role as well as those wishing to combine two roles (between 0.5 and 1.0 WTE).  Balancing wellbeing with work demands and developing your professional skills are highly valued within the UHS Adult Psychology team. It offers many opportunities to develop your interest in therapeutic approaches through informal networking, facilitated reflective practice, education days and specialist supervision or discussion groups. Currently we have active interests in Systemic, Acceptance and Commitment, and EMDR but facilitate learning in other approaches.

UHS Adult Psychology are active in local and national specialist psychology groups, are developing a research strategy and have close links with Southampton University Clinical and Health Psychology courses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work with the clinical teams to provide a psychological service for the team, patients, and families. You will offer assessment and therapeutic interventions to patients and supervision, consultation, and training to medical teams. You will work to embed psychological principals within patient care and link to national specialist groups within clinical health psychology.

Experience in working in an acute physical health setting and with evidence-based approaches to managing trauma is beneficial.

These posts may be appropriate for preceptorships and newly qualified psychologists depending on pre-qualification experience.

We would be willing to be accept applications who are in the final stages of training and will be applying for HCPC registration after qualification.  This would be a preceptorship role.

Within all posts you will connect to the wider UHS Adult Psychology team and other link with Child Psychology, Neuro Psychology, Mental Health Liaison and wider psychological services to develop pathways around patient care.

Person specification

Qualifications, Experience and Training

Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists or equivalent experience Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist
  • In depth experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of people across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for patients’ psychological care and treatment, within the context of a multi-professional care plan
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of service development and working with teams

Desirable

  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology
  • Post-doctoral training in a specialised area of psychological therapy
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of working within a Physical Health Setting and in particular the area that the job is focused on
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
  • Experience of working with trauma using evidenced based approaches
  • Experience of working within the NHS as an Applied Psychologist
  • Experience of neuropsychological and psychometric Assessment
