This is an exciting opportunity for candidates who have recently earned their CCT and are looking to gain experience and bolster their portfolios working in a large Emergency Department alongside a great team of Consultant Emergency Phycisians. We seek to recruit highly motivated Emergency Physicians, who will be part of the multi professional team delivering high quality compassionate emergency care to the people of Cardiff and South Wales. They will be encouraged to develop or maintain an area of special interest alongside their role as a Post CCT Fellow in Emergency Medicine.

Main duties of the job

You will provide with consultant colleagues a service in Emergency Medicine to UHW, with responsibility for the prevention, reception, diagnosis and treatment of all patients presenting to the Emergency Unit.

You will be expected to perform the role as Trauma Team Leader for all trauma patients brought in by road or air. You will be expected to coordinate the preparation, reception and resuscitation of the patient. You are responsible for the ongoing transfer of the trauma patient. The opportunity for the post CCT Fellow will be a minimum of 1 TTL shift per fortnight

You will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge in liaison with consultant colleagues and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan (as amended from time to time).

Audit

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of engagement with revalidation

Ability

Essential

  • Able to work at senior level without supervision
  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Attitudes to emergency medicine compatible with the aims and objectives of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
  • Counselling and communication skills

Desirable

  • Computing skills

Research

Essential

  • Ability to appraise research critically
  • Ability to supervise junior staff in undertaking research projects

Desirable

  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching medical students, junior doctors and Advanced/Emergency Nurse Practitioners

Desirable

  • Organisation of (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) teaching programmes
  • Experience of training in simulation environments

Experience

Essential

  • Current hands-on experience in the management of adult and paediatric emergencies and the full spectrum of presentations to a modern emergency unit
  • 12 months experience in Emergency Medicine at middle grade level in the UK with ability to manage the department with remote support
  • 4 years post grade experience in specialties relevant to emergency medicine

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a very large department (according to RCEM definitions)

Management

Essential

  • Ability to take a whole systems approach to Emergency Department working
  • Able to lead a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Experience in the management of change
  • Evidence of management training

Qualifictaions

Essential

  • ATLS, APLS, ALS certification
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Current GMC Registration with Full License to Practice
  • CCT in Emergency Medicine

Desirable

  • Intercalated Degree
  • Instructor in one or more Advanced Life Support courses
  • Academic Excellence (Prizes, merits, distinctions etc.,)
  • MSc or PhD
