As a Band 5 Plaster Room Technician, you will play a vital role in the care pathway by applying and removing plaster casts, splints, and other orthotic devices. Working closely with clinical teams, you will ensure high standards of patient care, safety, and comfort.

This position will not be supported for visa sponsorship.  All applicants are expected to have valid right to work document to work in the UK when applying for this position.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out a full range of plaster/orthotic/splinting/bracing applications, both routine and complex, provide high quality patient focused service for trauma and orthopaedic patients including paediatric and specialised casting such as Hip spkiers and Total Contact Casts.

They will provide care in relation to all aspects of casting as well as basic wound care and the removal of K wires, clips and sutures as necessary.

The post holder will at times be required to perform a broader more demanding range of activities e.g. making and modifying casts to suit the individual needs of the patient which will include making braces, applying plaster on babies and specialist casts for diabetic patients.

On some occasions they may be required to work in A&E resuscitation and ITU when requested by the Orthopaedic team

The post holder is expected to work autonomously, but will be able to seek appropriate advice where necessary and to report to the Lead Orthopaedic Practitioner on any special problems that might occur.

Working closely with clinical teams, they will ensure high standards of patient care, safety, and comfort.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

Apply and remove plaster casts, splints, and other immobilization devices accurately and safely.

Maintain the plaster room and equipment in line with health and safety standards.

Assist clinicians in the management and treatment of fractures and injuries.

Provide patient education on cast care and management.

Maintain accurate records and documentation.

Deploy plastering skills on a day to day basis, to ensure patients get the appropriate cast at all times.

Ensure all necessary material resources are available for the service sessions and allocate as appropriate.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate physical, social and psychological care, according to the needs of the patients.

Ensure safe storage, use and administration of all medicines and substances according to Trust Policy

Acts as chaperone at the request of patients and staff or allocate a suitably trained person.

Maintain the patient's safety during invasive procedures.

Act as the patients advocate during consultations, investigations and/or treatment and protect their rights and dignity.

Apply specialist casts in main theatre such as Hip Spica Casts when requested by an Orthopaedic Consultant.

Organise and assist the orthopaedic team in the manipulation of fractures using Entonox and local anaesthetic.

Education and Training

Essential

  • British Casting Certificate (BCC) (formerly BOA/RCN (SOTN) AOT casting techniques certificate).
  • Orthopaedic trained in plaster technique.
  • Evidence of continual development
