We are seeking to appoint a Physician Assistant to work alongside our Consultants, the Resident Doctor Team and Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals. This is a full time post (37.5 hours) . It is envisaged that the role will be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee’s clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service. The work of the unit involves dealing with a wide range of Paediatric Plastic Surgery, including conditions within the subspecialities of Craniofacial Surgery, Cleft Lip and Palate, Congenital Hand Surgery and Ear reconstruction as well as general Plastic Reconstructive surgery. The post is well supported and will involve working with the medical teams in terms of ward care including acute assessment, care of ward in-patients and also with the opportunity to lead consultations in a specialist craniofacial plastic surgery clinic and possible activity in the operating theatres. There will be opportunities to develop extended skills such as cannulation and venesection in children and infants, assessment and management of craniofacial conditions and wounds as well as contributing to audit and research projects within the service.
Main duties of the job
- To provide expert assistance to the Consultant , middle grade and junior Doctors in the provision of a high quality, patient centred service.
- To participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skills and knowledge
- Full Clerking of patients to include assessing and examining acute medical/speciality patients, ordering appropriate investigations, interpreting investigation findings
- Coordinating patients on ambulatory pathways related to their support
- Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure children , young people and their families are fully informed and consent to treatment
- Communicate with and support children, young people and families who are receiving bad news
- Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication
- Produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patients consultation, consistent with legislation, policies and procuderes
- Prioritise, organise and manager own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality
- Act as a "champion" for the Physician Assistant role
- Assist in the development and preparation of the Physician assistant teaching materials in areas of clinical examination skills, communication skills and clinical medicine

Applicant requirements
The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
