Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician in Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to join the NUH Pharmacy Team in Nottingham City Hospital. You will be responsible for providing comprehensive, professional and high-quality technical support across hospital wards and departments on a rotational basis, managing dispensary, laboratory and distribution activities to support the delivery of safe and effective pharmaceutical services. You will be responsible for dispensing and labelling pharmaceuticals, accuracy checking dispensed items in line with departmental and Trust procedures and supporting the wider Pharmacy Team in delivering excellent customer care. You will also support the coordination of pharmacy services in designated areas and deputise for Team Leaders when required, while promoting a positive and professional image of NUH Pharmacy.

Main duties of the job

As a Pharmacy Technician you will be responsible for working across both Nottingham City Hospital and Queens Medical Centre, contributing to a flexible seven-day rota that includes weekends, late duties and bank holidays. You will be managing your workload in line with departmental time and accuracy standards, while completing the required competency validation and re-validation processes. You will be supporting the safe handling and preparation of specialist medicines, including cytotoxic and controlled drugs, and ensuring prescriptions are interpreted and prepared in accordance with professional and ethical standards set by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). You will also support flexible shift arrangements designed to meet the operational needs and opening hours of the NUH Pharmacy service across both campus sites.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide appropriate advice to patients and carers regarding their medicines, explaining safe and correct use in a clear and accessible manner to promote understanding, adherence and safe medication practices.
  • To respond professionally to telephone and face-to-face enquiries from patients, carers and a wide range of healthcare staff, resolving queries within scope and referring more complex matters to the appropriate Pharmacy team member.
  • To manage pharmaceutical stock across allocated rotational areas, including ordering, receipt, issuing and routine stock maintenance, while completing scheduled stock checks and maintaining accurate electronic records.
  • To support the development of colleagues by assisting with the induction and training of new Pharmacy staff, apprentices and support workers, acting as a positive professional role model within the department.
  • To coordinate the activities of dispensary support staff, allocating and monitoring delegated tasks to help maintain an organised and effective service, and deputising for Lead Technicians when required.
  • To undertake specialist pharmaceutical manufacturing activities, including adult, paediatric and neonatal total parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, cytotoxic, intrathecal and non-sterile preparations, while carrying out relevant environmental, equipment and quality assurance checks.
