Job overview

The Pharmacy Technician will work closely with the Senior Pharmacy Technician, Dispensary Manager and the dispensary team in helping develop the dispensary service. This includes helping to coordinate and support the day to day running of the dispensary.

The post holder will help in co-ordinating and supporting the dispensary team. They will work closely with medicines management technicians, stores and distribution team and the purchasing team. They will also be responsible for training and development and implementation of procedures for all technical staff working in dispensary.

We could offer this post as a band 4 to 5 progression for the candidates who do not have ACPT.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the development of the technicians’ role in the dispensary
  • Develop and optimise the use of medicines from all wards in the Trust
  • Be an accredited checker (ACPT) for checking dispensed items in dispensary and for the discharge team.
  • Assess the suitability of returned drugs for use within the Trust according to agreed protocols
  • Liaise with the ward pharmacy team and manage the discharge tracker for patients being discharged.
  • Co-ordinates the day to day dispensary team and supports with training for dispensary/rotational technicians
  • Dispense and label medicines for patients ensuring that patients have appropriately labelled medicines and ensure that supplies will last whilst on the ward and at the time of discharge
  • Co-ordinate the discharge medication by ensuring that POD’s sent to pharmacy are put together with newly dispensed items in advance of patient discharge.
  • Dispense and counsel patients regarding their medication regimens in order to ensure patients understand their medication and possible side effects. These may be patients with certain barriers e.g. hearing problems, language issues. This will also include counselling specialist medication (eg dermatology medicines, TB medicines on out-patients
