Job overview

The Band 5 Painter & Decorator is a senior skilled tradesperson within the HHCS Estates and Facilities team, providing a high‑level, specialist painting and decorating service across the Trust’s acute, community, and non‑clinical premises. The post‑holder undertakes complex, non‑routine building fabric work that requires advanced technical knowledge, diagnostic skills, and professional judgement to ensure the healthcare estate remains safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.

Working with minimal supervision, the post‑holder has end‑to‑end responsibility for the effective planning, assessment, delivery, and completion of assigned works. This includes the inspection and diagnosis of complex defects, identification of underlying causes such as moisture ingress, material degradation, or environmental damage, and the selection and application of appropriate specialist coatings, finishes, and repair techniques. Work is delivered in accordance with technical drawings, specifications, NHS Estates guidance, statutory regulations, and Trust policies.

The role carries a significant safety and compliance responsibility, ensuring that all activities are undertaken in strict adherence to health and safety legislation, infection prevention and control standards, and Permit to Work systems. The post‑holder plays a key role in maintaining occupied clinical environments, applying risk‑based decision‑making to prioritise tasks and minimise disruption to patient care and operational services.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an NVQ Level 3 qualified professional with significant experience in diagnosing complex fabric faults, such as moisture ingress or chemical breakdown, and specifying appropriate remedial actions. You will be an expert in applying specialist coatings—including hygienic, epoxy, and fire-retardant products—and performing advanced tasks like heat-bonded wallcoverings. You will be an active team player who embraces high standards of working and supports the growth of our workforce.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Complex Trade Tasks: Carry out high-precision painting and decorating, including treating damaged substrates, degraded surfaces, or complex architectural features.
  • Diagnostics: Diagnose underlying causes of decoration failure, such as water ingress, damp, or chemical breakdown, and specify remedial actions.
  • Specialist Applications: Apply specialist coatings including epoxy, hygienic/clinical coatings, industrial floor finishes, and fire-retardant products.
  • Advanced Wallcoverings: Undertake advanced tasks such as wide-width, heat-bonded, and specialist clinical-grade finishes.

  • Equipment Safety: Conduct inspections of access equipment, including mobile towers, podiums, and scaffolds, within the scope of training. Undertake and review risk assessments for tasks as required.
  • Multi-Skilled Support: Execute multi-trade tasks such as minor joinery, plastering, flooring, and small-scale building repairs.
  • Operational Flexibility: Work flexibly across Trust properties and participate in on-call and out-of-hours arrangements as required.
