We are seeking a motivated children’s nurse to join our paediatric team, in delivering high standards of care to our children and their families. To make an impact you need to be enthusiastic, organised, with good communication skills and a genuine interest in children’s orthopaedic care. The post holder will initially work on Alice ward, whilst developing skills to work in both the paediatric pre op and paediatric clinics.
Alice Ward is a 16 bedded children ward, caring for children requiring orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation. Our outpatient department runs both orthopaedic, pre op and medical clinics.
This is a 24hr post, working 12-hour shifts both during the day, night and weekends.
The applicant must hold a Registered Children’s nursing qualification (RN8 or RNC sub Part 1 of NMC register) to apply for this post.
Main duties of the job
Under the direction of the unit manager / ward sister you will be responsible for providing skilled nursing care within a multidisciplinary environment, to ensure safe, individualised and effective care of children and their families and assist in the on-going development of the paediatric unit, contributing to the continuity of good team spirit and high standards of nursing care.
Utilising the ward’s resources to promote excellence in practice and promotes and expediting quality issues relevant to service delivery.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Be accountable and responsible for maintaining own nursing practice. The post-holder will be able to underpin applied theoretical knowledge in a variety of situations to determine direct patient care.
- Provide a high standard of nursing care, based on the assessment of care needs - in consultation with the patient, their relatives and the multidisciplinary team.
- Continuously evaluate the quality of care given, regularly re-assessing the needs of the child, in consultation with the child, family and the multidisciplinary team.
- Liaise with other professionals to ensure cohesive patient care.
- Formulate well-planned discharges, ensuring effective liaison with the family, Trust Allied Health Professionals and community services.
- Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of the child, family, carers and staff, and uphold the Trust's Diversity/Equal Opportunities Policy.
- Facilitate and maintain patient records to ensure information is accurate and up to date for future reference and complies with the Data Protection Act, NMC Patient Record Keeping Guidelines, and prepares care plans to ensure the delivery of effective patient care.
- Manage time effectively, ensuring patients are ready for planned procedures and staff receive adequate breaks during the working day and finish at the appropriate time.
- Ensure the safe delivery of medicines by the prescribed route adhering to national and Trust guidelines. Be able to calculate and administer paediatric drug dosages safely and accurately.
- Can recharge intravenous and epidural drug administration pumps, demonstrating the ability to recognize early signs of drug reaction, and the appropriate steps to be taken.
